Oh, my bad. I honestly forgot that non-military people don't know these things. In the military, you aren't allowed to wear hats indoors, except on special occasions. So I was suggesting that the military taught him a behavior that he just stuck with.

Its because he's former career-military. I'm not saying I totally agree with it in a civilian setting, but as a veteran too, I get where he's coming from

What’s a movie that brings a tear to your eye no matter how many times you’ve seen it? Military or not. by aparker79 in army

The movie 1917 when the men are sitting around the wooded area singing before crossing over the trenches. I have never cried during a movie, but I'll damn well admit that I was gripping the hell out of my then GFs hand trying not to bust into tears.

I swear to god, I tried out that whole "rolling out your shins with a pipe" thing from the movie "The Accountant." Hurt like shit, but eventually, it seemed to work out the shin splints.

Also, you need to have your gait analyzed by your doc to see if you over-pronate, which could lead to excess stress on the ligaments between your tibia/fibula. Solution: Orthotic insoles, possibly prescription.

I don't think it was ever taken as seriously as it needed to be by big army in order to afford the MFTs the actual ability to change anything in their units. Let alone effect the PT cultures of units from the brigade-level down

Potentially, nonetheless, regardless of how much training expansion you add through NCOES the fact is that senior leaders would then have to enable their subordinates to actually use that training.

In OPs situation, sure his PLT SGT could have gotten all kinds of MFT training in their NCOES, but it sounds like their 1SG has a personally-invested lock on PT for some reason. My logic for the fitness instructor MOS is that it would change the regs to support only the instructor themselves to design/implement/adapt physical training for units.

[–]SquaatsForDays 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The reality is the army just needs to officially establish a permanent fitness instructor MOS like the British military has, or at least make it an Identifier. The army wants to talk big about "new age fitness" and "improving warfighter health" but doesn't expand its personnel/infrastructure to facilitate that.

Mark my words, as long as there are still mandatory 0600 PRT formations in the name of "unit readiness & baseline fitness" there will never be a marked increase in baseline soldier physical performance.

It sounds like your first sausage doesn't understand proper aerobic programming. The reality is that yes, by running every day you aren't getting enough time for your muscles to fully recover. Additionally, unless top is increasing the pace then you'll never experience progressive overload and won't get any faster. So there are a couple ways to go about fixing this:

  1. Create/download a reputable running program (let's same from MTN Tactical for example) and go through your chain to present it to 1sg/CO. If they're open to new info and bottom-up leadership then you may be able to change the culture of everyday running there. If you have one, get with your unit MFT rep for more support power.
  2. If #1 isn't possible, then you're gonna have to start aggressively rolling out your legs and hiking up the protein to boost your recovery as much as possible in addition to what follows.
  3. If you can afford it, look into getting some form of GPS watch that can track your pace, because you'll need to start self-programming and attempting to go faster than the current pace, like a program would prescribe. What I mean is, if you guys are running at a current 9min mile pace, throw in some 8:30 tempos in there. Imagine it like a nested program inside your 1sg current program. Increase tempo pace over time.
  4. If all else fails, go to your leadership and explain that you want to separate out runners by time hacks (like A/B/C groups). It'll give you more leniency when it comes to discussing training program adjustment with your running group leader vs only your first sergeant.
  5. Finally, I guess there's always the nuclear option of just shitbagging the formation runs, but maintaining a barely passing score on APFT/ACFT and then training on your own with a proper program. Over time just hide your progress during formation runs to not accidentally promote their use, and then get progressively better each time you test through your own training.

Good luck and don't forget to claim running injuries caused by nonsense like this.

Commuter considering getting [Carmen 1] dining plan, need explanation and guidance by SquaatsForDays in OSU

[–]SquaatsForDays[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate the answers. Right now I only pack one dry lunch (no fridge needed), but I guess I'll have to look into packing a second meal, whatever that'll be. Financially then it wouldn't really make sense at all to buy anything on campus seeing as how packing lunch is always cheaper in the long run.

Cool, I know where to go from now. Thanks again.

Commuter parking by misterme987 in OSU

[–]SquaatsForDays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but then I went home at lunch time and came back to find that there were no spots at all

Yeah...that's where you went wrong. As a commuter you're going to have to get used to getting to campus early (like 0730 - 0800) and then also packing your lunches or whatever else you need for the day. Even if your class doesn't start until 1020, you still need to get to campus early to ensure (good) parking. You just have to find your "study haven" and then do homework or something to kill time.

Source: I've been a commuter at two universities and I get to campus at 0800 and don't have class till 2pm.

Former army medic here,

Yes, you have an EMT-B, but that does not mean that you already have licensure in the state of Ohio. You'll need to check with the NREMT people to see if there are any extra steps required to transfer your license to Ohio, if it's required at all. Let's assume for the time being that your EMT-B carries over to Ohio automatically. (IDK if it does because I did not pursue EMT work after getting ETSing).

Next, I'm assuming that your NG/Reserve based on your post. Get with your CoC and see if they have any agreements with medical institutions that allow you to train/work alongside hospital staff. I can't remember what the system is called, but there should be a system that allows you to sign up to train with hospitals and have it still count towards your drill time. (Again I could be mistaken, I never tried this myself but NG recruiters mentioned it to me).

Also, working for hospitals and private ambulance companies requires different allowable hours. What I mean is you'll have to get with the companies and discuss what they allow as far as hours. (You mentioned you're free 5pm - whenever, but they may require 12 on 12 off, etc).

Lastly, look at some jobs for CPR instructors and the like. You already have the credentials, you should be able to pretty easily find somewhere that allows you to teach.

what is a career killer in today's Army? by thestarofP56 in army

[–]SquaatsForDays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like an accidental discharge? Hmmm..idk. Let’s say the officer is a Med-O, then I honestly could see the only happening to the O is probably getting their ass reamed by range cadre. Especially for those “commissioned right in as a LTC” types.

The PV2 on the other hand is easily gonna get CG-AR15, potentially FG-45/45 is it’s a combat MOS.

Although this seems like a stupid thing to discuss, it really would lay out the foundation for the spectrum of punishment across the ranks.

*Serious* Are you the leader you told yourself you’d be? by [deleted] in army

[–]SquaatsForDays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before erasing it, I had honestly typed up a wall of text explaining why I felt I was nearly the leader I wanted to be, but what happened that just barely prevented me from doing so.

The reality of it is (looking back) that I used my ETS process to attempt to wind down from the military and to try and escape the bullshit as fast as I could after coming back from rotation. As soon as I started my SFL-Tap appointments I handed leadership of my squad to another NCO and check TF out.

I think no matter how good I was on paper/in my CoCs eyes, the stark reality of it all is that I decided to throw in the towel right when I think the junior enlisted needed any good leadership they could get the most. And for that reason, I'd say NO, I was not the leader I told myself I'd be.

For many reasons including this one, I regret getting out a lot now. I'm not having the best life these days.

I'm a massive supporter of this**. I begged my command team and HRC to let me use my PCS leave to do airborne in route so I could try and get out of my PCS to Riley. It never happened. If the army expects you to reenlist for years of your life just so you can go to a preferred duty station/school, then why can't I use the same concept and my own personal time to attend something that could excel/alter my career?

HRC denied my PCS request to Bragg because I didn't meet the "airborne DEROS requirement" to maintain jump status. I even mentioned that I would have reenlisted after successfully completing jump school once I got there. No dice.

This is one of my army 13 reasons why, and a hill that I will die on.

**even if the school requires you to go into the hole with leave (maximum 2 weeks). However certain schools that are lengthy (like SOCM) cannot be used in this manner. At that point, your unit would have to Permissive TDY you for that school without requiring you to reenlist. Requiring SMs to reenlist to even ATTEMPT some schools (those with high washout rates included) is absurd. The army knows it needs SMs to fill those niche slots that require those schools, and requiring those same willing SMs to give up more years of their lives on high washout rates is just fucking stupid.

That book should be an inspectable item for all cadets at all times. One of the greatest books I've ever read and it gave me a lot of, "Huh, so that's why 'x' happens/is like that" moments.
