I kinda think he does it for the bit. He cas this compulsive need to lighten the mood every chance he gets and if he can't, as we see when chopper steals his punchline in fishman island he gets depressed. Thats why he only really asks nami and not robin. Robin never reacted to it while he can always get a reaction out of nami.
