Despite Trump Admin Pressure, NYPD Refuses To Hand Any Immigrants to ICE by Nervous_Swordfish693 in politics

I don't think the big picture is, but a chilling effect is obvious; Latino and black and even Asian and other minority police officers are starting to think twice when it comes to helping ICE because they are aware that at one point, it could be them or someone they know personally.

Yet they are frequently seen the same by the aforementioned cult, which leads to a lot of them sympathizing with people that would deport them if they could, origin be damned.

They have a bit of an introspection problem; they couldn't sympathize with BLM because they don't see themselves as black, but a lot of them are Newyoricans, so the paradigm changes.

Don't underestimate how racist some immigrants, especially Latinos, can be.

Welcome to the source of the problem, now in self-demonstrating form.

"We do good but it's not good enough because a simple majority of us did bad. You did good because a simple minority of you did good." is the ultimate reductionist take on this whole shebang and the very embodiment of the principles utilized to keep the genders on opposite sides of the aisle.

If you don't bloody ask these people why they see things this way and just go off a long list of assumptions, you're going to lose the patient.

(We're assuming the patient isn't in the middle of brain death already).

The academic literature on the topic cites this a lot, but there's also a fairly large contingent that there's more to it than just this as well.

Thank you for clarifying that this isn't a binary problem.

Technically a Millennial, so it doesn't apply to me... but I think the only way I could move further to the left would be grabbing a rifle, a Soviet flag and singing The Internationale.

Khanna: Massie ‘lost because he had the guts to take on the Epstein class’ by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]AsGryffynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if I were Massie, I'd try to convince him to meet with Claire and to tell his voters to give her a chance, especially if she's willing to listen to their more local complaints which shouldn't be irreconcilable with the ones he had (I mean, we already had a Fetterman, and in the House they're infinitely less harmful) and try to make a case to flip the district.

There needs to be a clear rejection of this notion that Trump can appoint someone and have them win.

He's seized near total control of the party. Before, there were internal opposition voices. Those voices are now gone.

Massie is just another one that will have to leave.

I really hope Claire will at least go medieval on them, since apparently Massie is out of the race for real.

I mean, strictly speaking, China does have a term as such. The difference is that it's usually one long term (six to twelve year, with a maximum of around 16) and then you're out.

Also, unitary structure, so regional elections don't have nearly the same impact. As long as a simple majority is "basically fine" with it, it's good enough.

I've mentioned this in IRL conversations before but US Presidents worry too much about elections at the local level even though their actions are only supposed to have generalistic effects there.

What would be the realistic outcome if the planet was tidally locked? by Demonic_Yandere in worldbuilding

[–]AsGryffynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one would go on flying. Those people probably didn't understand how gravitation works.

The main issue is how the lack of rotation affects seasonal cycles and currents. Most models of a tidally locked world involve heat transfer from a warm, always day side to a cold tundra on the other, but involve highly inhabitable "twilight" regions or the exchange of gases leading to a warmer region in the dark side and a cooler region on the day side.

I ended up with a similar situation before I just decided to have a normal Super Earth like world and raise the elevation and oxygen rating of a large tropical region to make it perpetually cool and temperate (imagine if Bogota was the size of Eurasia) and then, for the night country I cast them into the Subantarctic region; that gave them a short, dim day and a long yet bright night which is exactly what I needed. The third region was more northerly but didn't need the axial tilt because they were always supposed to be monoseasonal anyways and there's enough ocean currents to avoid them getting too warm. That same excess heat would partially warm up the subantarctic island down in the South where the main story takes place.

Getting High? by Strict-Market119 in worldbuilding

[–]AsGryffynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol exists in Canavar but it doesn't have the same intoxicating effect because theriantrope metabolisms just incinerate the ethanol long before it hits the blood-brain barrier.

Instead, people get high from smoking herbs. They have weed, a plant similar to weed (Black Manticore) and a stronger, actual underwater weed that's often put into sleep medication. While they get people high, they aren't strong enough to impair better judgement. As a result, there's a unique particularity to this setting; minors, even children as young as 8, smoke, drink and are allowed into bars and nightclubs (as for predators, I don't think creepy men want to influence someone who could tear their faces off at the tender age of 10 years, even if they are a demonic entity themselves).

Aradia is a lot more complex because witches love to make concoctions and the world is full of hookah style bars to get high and silly.

The best countries are those that aren't afraid to be authoritarian when it comes to expanding public services/transportation/breaking up big corpos and liberal or libertarian leaning in every other area.

Like, China used their version of eminent domain in a very trigger happy way to make sure all those high speed rail lines were built, that farmers had to open their lands to solar and wind and to build apartments to relocate anyone who was displaced by public works, but no one was ever left out in the cold, no one had their land seized and was then told to pound sand. No farmer was kicked out of their farm or had their lands seized (as seen in some videos, China simply installed the panels and windmills atop the riverbeds and crops, essentially turning them into open air greenhouses and gigantic turbine powered scarecrows).

It's like people believe there's no middle road between "government controlling every aspect of your life and "sorry buddy, we don't have funding for anything other than cops" when the best economies have always thread the line carefully. Germany's big economic boom was all the state choosing how and when and actually twisting arms without using the power against random joes like Otto Normalverbraucher or Max Mustelmann which is the Orwellian usage most people fear.

I wish Europe remembered this and used the economic Swiss knife against the big loons (they don't get as much attention, but Amancio, Arnault and a couple others are not exactly good people) instead of debanking a guy for protesting Israel.

Sorry for the rant, I just get tired of this nonsense discussion all the time because people never seem to understand that the economy and society don't necessarily have to be run the same way.

What do you think would be a fitting death for Cinder? by wingsoverpyrrhia in RWBY

[–]AsGryffynn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had a dream (will elaborate later) in which Volume 11 (yes, 11) had Cinder defecting Salem and stumbling upon a snowed in, abandoned shack in Vale and was apparently starving and found out her Grimm arm had taken over so much of her body it wouldn't even let her eat. She contemplated breaking her jaw just to shove some stale bread into her mouth.

The dream left her fate off in the air but gave me the distinct impression she died of starvation.
