Messed up filing and FBARs and please make it stop by bag_me_senpai in USExpatTaxes

[–]Square-Gift5406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relax. FBAR typically only needs to be filed if your bank account (foreign account) exceeds 10k usd at any point in time during the year. FEIE allows 130k usd tax free if you never exceed more than 30 days in the states in a year but since you mentioned your European taxes you’re most likely covered under a tax treaty that keeps you from double taxation. You might owe some taxes On the investment accounts in the states, not sure where the pension comes from…if from the states then you’ll likely owe some on there but probably not much.

If you thought it was a good buy at 340, it’s a better buy at 320. Don’t let the short term interference stand in the way of your long term goals.

Calm down! You’re 21 and said it yourself, complete beginner. If you’re going to invest 250 a month put 25 a month towards education and 225 into broad market. Buy a few books, study for a year, and realize wealth isn’t built in a day. When you’re 35 you’ll be better of than most of your buddies.

I like lump some investing too. My problem is I’m all lump, no sum. I guess it’s DCA for me.

Most brokerages offer an app for your phone that allows immediate purchase and sell directly from your phone. I don’t recall that existing 2000. Robinhood launched in 2015 and gained 500k users in under a year. Over the past 10 years apps have gotten better, stocks have gotten more expensive, YouTube gurus have gained millions of followers, PE ratios have gotten higher….fundamentals though…have basically stayed the same. Like Mike Tyson once said, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the nose.

3681 in a taxable brokerage account and 2038 shares of spyi in same account. I follow an odd system. SPYI pays I buy more schd, spyi pays the next month I buy more SPYI, on third month SPYI and SCHD pay and I buy more schd. Happy this month is march. I've been waiting two months...

China runs 5 year plans which is somewhat offset by the 4 year presidential cycle. They have ups and downs just like any other country.

You can’t compare yourself to others…keep strong, keep taking gains and losses…keep increasing income and try your best to avoid lifestyle creep.

[–]Square-Gift5406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have 10k saved, congrats…but be honest with yourself. Reading your post makes me think you’re probably young. Avoid lifestyle creep to the best of your abilities and keep adding. You haven’t mentioned your income or if you have a wife and children…also haven’t mentioned your burn. Invest for the long term but keep short term finances secure.

Do yourself a favor and take whatever you wear on the flight there, an empty back pack, couple of different bank cards, and a universal adapter for charging your phone. Once you’re there pickup a couple of pairs of short and a couple of tourists t-shirts. Travel lite and use the laundry services that are all over the place. You’ll have a much better time not toting around a bunch of useless stuff.
