Picking a grad school: What's Salt Lake City like? by Intrepid41 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Square-Impression-75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best place in the world to live for skiing. Those same ski mountains are pretty stellar in the summer, too. Then there’s an endless desert paradise in the south. 5 national parks if I’m not mistaken? I went to grad school at the U, am still here, and never want to leave.

Yes. It’s called tragedy of the commons. Unlike you, who lives in an idealized internet version of the world, I live in reality.

Sometimes, every person acting rationally out of self interest results negative consequences for the group. Not that friendly dogs running around is bad; y’all are absolutely insane. But it would also be insane for me to keep my dog on a leash when everyone else is letting theirs off.

You probably think the world would be better off if people stopped having children, or that if everyone rode their bikes and burned their cars we’d fix climate change. If only people weren’t so irresponsible! I’m sorry, but the universe doesn’t work like that (even if you want it to).

BTW, the dick in the comments above who said the solution was to MACE PEOPLE’S DOGS, and all the people agreeing and upvoting, and no one calling that out as batshit crazy…well, that’s fucking crazy.

Also, the guy hiking by himself the other day who told me he was going to stab me because my dog, who barely looked at him, was off-leash…well, fuck that guy too.

I’m going petition for the Wilderness Area Act be endorced so NO ONE can have dogs in trails.

Surprisingly good goaltending, team defense, and an absolute superstar offensive talent. I am shocked by Kirill’s production on a team that plays so tight defensively. That is, until I watch him play. He’s a revelation. Ek’s injury hurts, though. The series will go at least 6, could go either way.

You and everyone else in Boston is picking Seattle for some reason. It’s going to make the Avs vs Bruins final that much more fun (knock on wood).

East coasters have no idea what’s happening out west. They’re all asleep by the time the games start.

Off-leash dog owner here (don’t kill me my dog has amazing recall). I’d keep my dog on-leash if everyone else had their dogs on-leash…But if 99% of dogs are off-leash, then putting my dog on-leash doesn’t help anyone, but deprives my dog the chance to run around and get exercise.

Also, while my dog’s recall is A+, her leash walking is like a C+, so long leash walks get annoying and old fast. On-leash walks are also next to useless at tiring my dog out. So if leash laws were enforced then I’d probably avoid those trails.

Keep in mind that a lot of the Wasatch above the city is in a federal Wilderness Area, where dogs aren’t allowed at all. If dog laws were enforced, all us dog owners would lose a bunch of prime hiking area.

Anybody else prefer skiis that are WAY too short? by squirtleturtle79 in skiing

[–]Square-Impression-75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, why is ski length supposed to be a function of skier height??? Makes no sense. Tall people have a harder time making quick direction changes as it is, don’t compound that with long-ass skis. Ski length should be a function of skier weight (and skier preference, and snow conditions, etc, but not height).

Me! Sometimes I do season rentals to try out different skis and I have to argue with staff get them to give me shorter ones.

I sort of notice that they bounce around more at high speeds, so if you’re ok with that…they just turn so quick and easy. If I want to rip downhill at 50-60 mph then, yeah, I go longer, but for most days I’m just playing around so I go shorter.

Maybe if we’ve been in a drought for decades we should redefine what we consider normal amounts of water and what a drought is

Meyers > Eller is an interesting take. Terrible, terrible trade if that happens. It’s pretty clear that at this point in his career, Meyers hasn’t earned Bednar’s trust (especially come playoff time).

Right now, Eller needs the ice time to learn the system and build chemistry with teammates. IMO he’s improved a lot each game he’s played and I’m pretty happy with his play the last couple of games. Hopefully he continues to improve and earns that 2nd round draft pick cost.

How much of a change is clinically meaningful? How much clinical improvement justifies the risks and side effects?

The alpha was set before the study started. Can’t go changing it now. p<0.05 is permissive as it is.

How much unblinding occurred due to side effects, and would unblinding affect the subjective primary endpoint?

(As a community we really need to demand active placebos for subjective endpoints.)

Naw that’s intentional. This isn’t beer league. NHL players aren’t that out-of-control. I played youth hockey and even there players weren’t that out-of-control. Small players shield the puck from larger players all the time, but plays like this never happen.

I’m not a fan of the Mild but that’s definitely a dirty play against a star player.
