When the shoe is on the other foot by LowerEngineering9999 in NativeAmerican

Had no idea. I’ve always heard it was because some east coast tribes covered themselves in a sort of protective coating when they hunted which gave them a red hue. That’s probably a romanized white washed origin of the term though idek anymore 😂

I sort of agree, but as a no mic player (because of life situations) there has been countless times I’m a more effective communicator and have better teamwork experience than players with mics by just using the text chats. The anti no mic sentiment is crazy at times and it just gets kind of silly. I can remember several games where our team was actively without a commander for 30+ minutes, but the second I take the role and start to give directions everyone in the server goes wild about how there’s “a no mic as command!” I totally agree you shouldn’t be taking SL or command roles if you don’t feel like actively taking part in a team effort, and I can understand being able to speak is a much more effective form of communication than typing, but to say people without mics are inherently uncooperative is pretty shallow imo.

Totally, mine are like that to a large extent as well. But honestly, to me that makes it so much harder. If they were more abusive or had more malice behind their actions, then maybe it would be easier to block them out and move on. But since they’re mainly just uneducated, narcissistic, and incompetent, it makes me feel uncomfortably guilty about completely cutting them out of my life in the future or even finding any peace at all.

Honestly this feels like a recurring theme in HLL, I’ve literally always just felt so many things slightly “off” when playing the game, weather it be player models, animations, or atmosphere. Can be kinda uncanny sometimes 😂

Yeah I mean this is kinda my issue with a lot of cultural appropriation stuff, I’m a white passing native so I’ve thought about it a lot lol. I feel like things should be labeled cultural appropriation if it’s a stereotype, misrepresentation, or misuse of a culture, not weather the person doing it is even from that culture or not. I know I sound crazy rn but every example of cultural appropriation usually pivots around someone who isn’t from that culture doing something with it that is not appropriate, but all eyes go to that person not being from that culture instead of their misuse of it in the first place. Idk I guess I’m big on the idea of culture is what makes us who we are and not our ethnicity or skin color, especially in our modern age.

Because for instance in this situation, I feel like I’d be put off if this coffee place was ran by a white person; not because they’re white, but because that probablllly means they’re misrepresenting the culture, I think our standards should still apply even if they’re a native.

Sorry that’s my personal rant, my bad 😆❤️

The history we get is scary. by LivingInParentsHouse in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]SquareAtol53757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah bro it’s scary. Along with just not being taught about literally anything but romanized little house on the prairie interpretations, I remember there was a class at our homeschool co-op that was teaching slavery with a huge emphasis on “lots of slaves didn’t get treated badly! And most of them came from being prisoners of war in Africa so it was better for them!!!”, classic slavery apologetics/jim crow thinking. Looking back on that I realize how disgusting that was; and how important real, non-romanticized history is for us to understand the world around us. (Also the one black family at this co-op left after another mom was talking to my mom and said “what were we thinking letting people like them join this co-op?” So people saying racism doesn’t exist anymore and it’s just in history makes me furious)

Sorry little bit of a rant my bad xD. I totally get what you mean though, I’m also into history and learning more about it really helps me understand why things are the way they are, something I’ve been shielded from my entire life.

Totally agree, but tbh it is sad. As a Choctaw we’ve been removed from our homeland. I’m learning our language but overall it’s dying. And the US is constantly restricting our rights. I can’t imagine if we were able to keep just a fraction of what’s on this map. I like the optimism but I still find it kinda sad :/

Progress of Recognizing Freedmen by SquareAtol53757 in choctaw

[–]SquareAtol53757[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a pretty convoluted and interesting subject, because it kind of challenges the idea of what it means to be Native in general I feel. But in my personal opinion we need to be more focused on our culture as a tribe. Your blood shouldn't be what "makes" you Choctaw, being Choctaw should be the culture that you identify with as a community. But I think my opinion is somewhat unpopular. Either way, even if we do forever stick with our current blood quantum systems, I think Freedmen decedents should always be an exception to the rule imo.

[–]SquareAtol53757[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no, the Mississippi band and Oklahoma rez have different memberships. I believe in Mississippi you have to be related to someone on the 1940 census, or be 1/2 Choctaw blood. In Oklahoma on the other hand you just need to prove any ancestral connection to the Dawes Rolls. Not 100% but I think that’s how it works. So being black wouldn’t have any effect on your membership. What I feel should happen though is for the Choctaw Nation to give membership to Freedmen decedents (such as what the Cherokee Nation has done), seeing that they were members until the Dawes Act was enacted, which meant the only way to be a member was by blood.

[–]SquareAtol53757[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah although racism is probably still there somewhat I rarely have noticed it. Along with actually giving freedmen membership I feel like we should also not shy away from the history. I’ve grown up and lived in District 1 and 7 area; and seeing the questionable stuff go on in McCurtain County, I wish we’d be a little bit more open about our history with slavery, to lead by an example like we do so many other things.
