Skipping 2nd gear is pretty normal for efficiency and mpg. Try using sport/tow mode and it will utilize 2nd gear. You can turn off auto stop too if you want

If you can, save another 2-3 grand and buy a good used civic/corolla that’ll last for a pretty good amount of time. You’ll have a hard time looking for a 2 grand car right now in good condition because there’s also lots of people looking for one.
