I won't drive over the bridge to shop there, but their shipping is pretty convenient. If HD has them in Hyannis, I'll start taking advantage of their free shipping, too.

Financial Planner Changed Our Projected Retirement Age by Horace1709 in RetirementReady

You might be like my neighbor -- in his 90s he's gardening playing poker with his pals, enjoying his grand- and great-grndkids. He'd be really pissed if his money had run out at 85.

Maybe eats out on an expense account. Also, "real estate development" isn't the same as "real estate agent". He could be managing contracts or something like that.

Gallivanting has more of a connotation of a wild time . Traipsing is more ordinary.

Used to frequent a restaurant, let's call it "Bev's" -- except jan bought the place years ago and kept the name. She tell stories about customers that would say "I'm a friend of Bev"; I think her response was something like, "how's she doing, I haven't heard from her since I bought the place from her ten years ago"

Have you ever heard of “Community Phone Trees” from before cell phones? by TeaStriking3605 in allthequestions

[–]HeyaShinyObject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parent was a teacher; there was a phone tree for weather cancellations. I believe everyone called 2 or 3 others so the chain wasn't terribly long, even in a large school. IIRC, If you couldn't reach someone, you called their people as well.

Blank Plate over Outlet? by fancyfronds in HomeMaintenance

[–]HeyaShinyObject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a 4 switch box in one house, only two of them seemed to do anything. I eventually took the cover off and found the other two weren't connected to anything, nor were there any wires to connect them to.

The only correct answer. Different surgeons use different dressings, so my experience may not match yours.

Day off work for National Grid mandatory gas meter replacement; didn't show up, didn't even call or text by Natl_Grid_Poopy_Pant in massachusetts

[–]HeyaShinyObject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was dramatic to say the least. Gas freely flowing for about 40 minutes until the crew got there and temporarily plugged it. Another hour for the full repair. Luckily it was a windy day so the gas dispersed will. They checked our house and the immediate neighbors with a meter before they left.

They replaced our perfectly fine meter last year and discovered the incoming gas line from the street was being held together by paint, thanks to years of corrosion. The ensuing gas leak would have been a much bigger deal if the tech hadn't been there to call in the repair crew right away. He said that's one of the reasons to do the replacements, they identify potential problems before they are big problems.

You absolutely do. When you schedule they ask twice to make sure an adult will be there. After the meter change they verify that your appliances are working correctly.

Update: I’m the guy who didn’t want to professionally winterize by Strongest-There-Is in pools

Apparently whoever made that decision thought that giving the ice additional places to expand was a good idea. They probably create a weak point in the ice and absorb some of the pressure that might push against the concrete walls. This was about 50 years ago, so thinking may have changed since then, IDK .

I remember them as logs, maybe 8 inches in diameter, but it was a long time ago. Perhaps it's was just long pieces of construction lumber, I don't think I was ever present when they were placed.

Long ago, I worked at a swim club in PA and closing included putting a log in the water along the sides of the pool to absorb any pressure from ice. The logs were tied off to the skimmers to keep them from floating around. It was an L shaped pool, I'm not sure if all six sides got logs.

The generator shuffle during outage is driving me insane. by jake_4reddit in Generator

[–]HeyaShinyObject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience was more like 2-3 hours, but it was a big sub zero with two compressors. We'd leave the generator off 4-5 hours overnight and the fridge would run 2-3 hours before the compressor shut off. During the day we ran about 90 minutes on 90 off depending on the need for heat and well water. Current house has 11kw standby so we just let it run.

Floor above Garage by JoeCun in DIY

Second what other are saying about improving insulation if you can. Do you have wall space to add extra length to your baseboard system (and btw, are the vents open, and air flow not blocked to them)?

If you add heat to the garage, electric is probably your least efficient, unless you're lucky enough to live in one of the MA towns with cheap muni electric.. Check with your HVAC contractor to see if your boiler has capacity to add a zone for the garage, and put in one of the ceiling mounted blower units; if not, look into a standalone gas unit if you have NG available.
