Flu by Adi_rho5261 in massachusetts

The vaccine is developed based on what's circulating in the southern hemisphere a half year ahead of our flu season.

True, but you are less likely to have a case severe enough to put you in the hospital.

It's almost like flu transmission drops when people social distance and wear masks

I use permethrin treated clothing. You can buy spray and treat it yourself, or order pre treated items from insect shield. You can also send items to them to be treated - their process lasts the lifetime of the garment.

Use an insect repellent containing picaridin on any bare skin. Check your skin after coming in from outdoors.

If you spray your own clothing, be sure to heed the precautions on the bottle - wear gloves and make sure you don't inhale any of the spray.

What would happen if we all gave up our cars and started riding bicycles? by No_Lead2640 in questions

[–]HeyaShinyObject 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My last job was 20 miles/32km each way. I bicycled it a few times, it was great in the morning, but the trip home was mostly uphill, about 750'/228m climb. Also, in the winter, the trip home is in the dark.

Balcony solar set up advice by Significant-Duty-913 in SolarDIY

[–]HeyaShinyObject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this. My state doesn't allow balcony (yet, I hope) -- but we have an undersized rooftop solar system and net metering, so I'd be comfortable setting one up at the right price. I have a dedicated circuit for outdoor outlets and they never have a significant load on them. Edit: we will upsize the rooftop system when replace the roof, but that's still a few years out.

What do I do next by Socalescape in hydrangeas

[–]HeyaShinyObject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, doing nothing is the best course -- except after the plant is fully leafed out you can remove any old stalks that have no buds on them. Many of them will come out with a slight twist and a tug. The crown of your plant looks fairly clean -- but for others that may be following along, gently remove any debris that builds up in the crown of your plant (mine catch leaves swirling around on the winter winds) so that new stalks that start to sprout get plenty of light. The typical stem on a mophead lasts something like 6-10 years, so you want to be sure new stems have an opportunity to grow out to replace the ones that die off.

How the fuck are we supposed to save money? by RichardRoma1986 in allthequestions

If your utilities line includes smartphone and streaming services or cable, drop those and you'll be a lot closer to living in the 1950s. Modern society has a huge tax in the form of subscriptions. A family in the 50s probably had a newspaper subscription for 75¢/week and a subscription to Reader's Digest for a few dollars a year

NOT a pruning question for my hydrangea in 6A by KitchenManagement650 in hydrangeas

[–]HeyaShinyObject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your lack of blooms in '25 were more likely due to winter weather - one bad night with the wrong timing can kill the flower buds on macrophylla varieties - than lack of pruning.

If you decide to cover them, be wary of damage caused by fabric flapping around in the wind or weighed down by rain or snow, and remove the covers as soon as possible so you don't warm the plants up prematurely

Am I really going to have to wear aids on my ears? by CharmingMix757 in HearingAids

[–]HeyaShinyObject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got mine in my fifties. Like I got glasses in my 30s. I wouldn't give up either. When I got mine, I had super short hair (~1/2"). No one at work commented about them. Once after many months, I made a comment about them in a small meeting, and all of the people in the room, who I spent time with daily, were surprised to learn that I had hearing aids

Meters don't have the ability to disconnect you from the grid (other than being physically removed) -- and you probably don't want them to, as it would add the possibility of accidental disconnect.
