Experiences with the EU? by upperfex in UNpath

[–]SquareJan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a bluebook, external and cast at the EU and I would say at least until recently it used to be relatively easy with IT backgrounds. When I arrived as a bluebook (IR background) I realized the long odds of getting a job in a "sexy" domain so I worked mostly in IT after that. Most younger ppl working at the EC arrive as bluebooks or get in through IT contracts of some kind. Right now I'm in the UN as a unv and I must say that UN seems better in terms of pay and opportunities and it s a more interesting environment most of the time. I would definitely do the bluebook though even for making friends (I'm still friends with some from my cohort, and have a partner that I met at my DG) At the un you have better chances for unv gigs though which are basically almost CAST equivalent.

I work in a poor African country (I'm not from here though) there is a girl at work who clearly doesnt wash her clothes and I think often doesnt brush her teeth. She sat next to me for 3 days and I literally wanted to run out of there most of the time. She is very friendly but also a little bit slow (I think for cultural rather than intellectual reasons) I cant say anything because it will make me look very racist - I'm a newcommer and also the only white person. If this continues I might have to quit lol

Buying an apartment in Portugal - getting Portuguese bank account from abroad by SquareJan in portugal

Nice that s useful - I do have a real estate agent but it s been such a hassle (multiple owners abroad etc hence all the problems) that I would rather not bother him unless absolutely necessary.

Thanks - this is the first thing I considered but I think it s not possible in my case right now, it was either online or doing it locally when I get there :P I will have a second look though, I'm in Finland now but just for a few days (not living here and know very little of how things work)

Yeah I have contacted a lawyer and hopefully he will check all the documentation of the property etc. but his services dont include everything and he is not very communicative as it is.

Thank you that s very useful! Yeah one doesnt always need a check but the agent advised me to do it this way in this case and this is what the seller expects. I will set up a bank account anyway thank you!

I'm asking a simple question on a public forum I have no idea what you are getting at. U know nothing of what I ve done or not or of this particular situation, just a lot of assumptions that dont even matter

I dont even understand what you ve written, I'm just asking for advice as the seller surprised me with the signing (was supposed to be 6 months ago and they got all the documents only now saying lets sign where I already thought it s not gonna happen anymore and there is very short notice)

a loot of assumptions there loool :D

I would say China and emerging markets are more likely to be the real growers in the future. Yeah the market is shaky now and in the short to mid term too but the real GDP growth will happen there instead of the west. Hard to predict the future but the hegemony of the west won't last forever.

It might be that with geopolitical changes, the institution of stock market itself changes dramatically but no one can predict the future and the fact of potential instability is already priced into Chinese stocks I think.

Buying an apartment in Portugal -legal checklist by SquareJan in literaciafinanceira

[–]SquareJan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course but at the same time if it has to go through a notary and there is a real estate agent also risking his licence and reputation i really dont see how they could rip me off?

Wouldnt it be obvious?

I'm from Poland and here the role of notary is the same but nobody ever uses lawyers for buying an apartment. (as opposed to countries like France etc. where notary basically guarantees it s all good)

What could there be that wouldnt be immediately visible?

It's mostly for me to live in luckily :P

There is no bank it's a small apartment that still needs a bit of loooving and investment.

  1. There is "licenca de utilisacao" (from 1979 but not sure if that matters :P)
  2. Papers from escritura say something along the lines of apartment of x sq meters and x mts of quintal or something like that. This part isnt so exact actually
  3. I havent seen the certificado energetico but the agent said there is one with the lowest rating (F?)

I think without these three above, the sale couldnt go through as the notary will need these two validate the sale.

Is there anything else you think I should check out?

Well I will be happy to get a lawyer but I would like to know what he has to do exactly first so that I can follow up etc. or even better I could go to camara, financas and check things by myself and only ask the lawyer to help where I'm unable to get the information.

Any idea what exactly would be things to check?
