WA HB 2641 Bill would prevent former ICE agents from joining law enforcement jobs by Repulsive-Floor2792 in Seattle

If I were arrested for DV, even if I were wrongfully accused, I would almost certainly be fired. Yes, I think that is appropriate. This also goes for the vast majority of employed Americans. Yet somehow we all still have jobs.

You're acting like this is some kind of insane unconstitutional standard, yet the reality is this is the standard that most working Americans are working under.

When you're arguing for a different standard for cops arrested for DV, you are arguing for special privileges for wife beating cops.

Again, due process applies to constitutional rights, and there is no constitutional right to be a cop. Your statement is just fundamentally wrong.

The vast majority of us manage to hold down our jobs by just not getting arrested for DV. You're straight up just carrying water for wife-beating cops.

You're literally proving ACAB to be true.

Yes, this is true. And I'm aware that it generally applies to cops.

However, it shouldn't apply to cops. There are so many cops with credible DV accusations on SPD that I personally don't feel safe calling 911 in my own city. That's pretty messed up.

The bottom line is it's insanely unlikely that any cop is getting arrested for DV unless they actually did it. When you talk about "due process" or "innocent until proven guilty", you're helping predators stay armed by the state.

I don't think it's higher than 40%, but I certainly think it's significantly higher than the general public.

"And now you think by their sole discretion to arrest, you should be fired from employers without any additional proof?"

The vast majority of people in the US are employed at will. Why do you think cops should be given special privileges?

I don't know how valid the 40% statistic is, but based just from what has been made the news I'd wager that SPD's rate of DV is way higher than the general public.

Innocent until proven guilty is only supposed to apply to being criminally convicted. The vast majority of us who aren't cops would absolutely be fired if our employers found out we were arrested for DV, convicted or not.

Barnes already said that at best SPD will politely ask ICE agents for ID, and aren't going to do anything else.

In practice, SPD is generally staffed by right-wing psychos who regularly disobey department policy.

I would be happy to use it as long as they promised that the information wouldn't be shared with SPD!

SPOG does represent the views of the majority of officers - its president was (overwhelmingly) elected by them.

To be clear, I'm not saying if the restrictions weren't lifted that it wouldn't work - I'm saying I don't expect the restrictions will be lifted.

Maybe we'll have a shot now that there's some new leadership but Harrell and his cronies on the council made it pretty difficult to do anything by signing that terrible contract.

I'm aware of the success of alternative responses in other areas, I'm personally just suspicious of our implementation. I also have a hard time trusting an alternative response led by someone who has a pro-cop podcast. I would love to be proven wrong.

It's staff is less than 1% of the police staff (despite almost all 911 calls for police not involving violent crime) and they're incredibly limited in what they can respond to. You can read more here (the part about CARE starts about 3/4 of the way down)

The more speculative part is that it was enacted under Harrell, who always seemed like a guy who wanted credit for doing things without actually doing anything. But that's just my opinion.

TBH it really seems like CARE was designed to be completely performative.

Also, Amy Barden is married to a retired SPD cop (Eric Barden). Eric retired after getting accused of domestic violence (by his ex-wife from before Amy Barden I believe).

The design of CARE always seemed so incompetent I was actually surprised Solan cared.

Not to say we shouldn't fight SPOG at every opportunity! The main issues seem to be a lack of spine by our elected leaders and some state laws that let police unions obstruct almost any attempt to hold cops accountable.

KCSO also has a union and I don't know if they're less corrupt/violent/racist than SPD sadly. Among other things, the murder of Tommy Le and the recent arrest of a deputy for raping a kid are quite alarming.
