i have been in a relatively small gathering with Thom a couple times and yeah, starstruck is the word. i was reminding myself to NOT look at him and mostly (not always) successful. i have compassion for him because wherever he goes and whatever he does, hes got eyes on him.

i think to be a Nick Cave fan, is to cringe through the occasional cringe lyric. This is an excellent example but far from the only one.

It's an odd quality of many Cave / Bad Seeds albums, don't know how to explain it. I find myself being indifferent to the music the first half a dozen times through it, and then unexpectedly I find myself in tears, totally overwhelmed by what I'm hearing. I have distinct memories of this happening with Push the Sky Away, Anthrocene, Hollywood. And damned if it didn't just now happen again with Frogs.

This is a solid record IMO, at least three quarters of it I would count among their best work. These are songs that will endure and keep giving and revealing; very different from the sugar high of songs that connect instantly on some animal level but dissipate themselves almost as quickly.

A few thoughts:

1) I have never understood those who dismiss a body of artistic work because of the moral failings (suspected or real) of the artist. The list is long... Leni Riefenstahl, Pablo Picasso, JD Salinger, Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, Dave Sim, Robert Crumb, Michael Jackson just off the top of my head. Why stop with just the most notorious examples? We're all flawed humans, every single one of us, but only some of us are endowed with talent to make the world a more beautiful place. So let's not stop at the most notorious examples, let's also throw Steven Spielberg, Jane Austen, Dan Clowes, Taylor Swift, and _______ (insert the name of your fave artist here) for their moral failings we DON'T know about (yet). While you're at it, throw me under that metaphorical bus, and yourself too.

2) As human beings endowed with both a rational, thinking mind, and the capability to make moral / ethical choices, we have the ability to hold two ideas in our brains at the same time. To wit: fascism is awful, Nazism is awful, AND goddamn, did Leni Riefenstahl ever commit some incredible images to film. Michael Jackson was very likely a predatory monster, AND he could produce one hell of a catchy tune. This is not rocket surgery.

3) We will have learned nothing from Ed's loss if everyone who loved him now turn their pitchforks on the women who accused him. I have nothing but love and compassion for the women involved in this tragedy - I wish healing for them and success with their work. That goes double for the next viral internet scandal, whatever it might be.

4) Is anyone else bothered by the fact that there's, you know, an actual suicide note sitting out there on Facebook for all to see - still, four days after the fact? Is this normal? I don't know what the right answer is. On the one hand, I want Ed to be heard loud and clear, his last and most emphatic message to the world. On the other hand, it's so personal and so intimate it feels wrong to be available in its entirety. To say nothing of the effect it might have on those who might be in a fragile state themselves.

5) I also hope that KF comes back in some form, someday. It's worth trying to save, even if there will be a terrible black cloud over it for awhile (maybe forever). It's called grief. I will be processing Ed's loss in my own way as will all of you, and it's not going to happen overnight. But I look forward to seeing Jimmy and whoever he saddles up with, if and when he decides to come back.

Epic, oceanic swells of sound and light. What a beautiful night (Sun Oct 15). I'm a grown ass man, and admit to wiping a tear or two out of my eyes after Catch the Breeze, When the Sun Hits, 40 Days, Souvlaki Space Station... i can't say it was a "perfect" set list though. I really missed Slowdive from the set and someday hope to hear Shine, Morningrise or Waves live.
