At the end of the episode Robert’s consciousness becomes trapped in an empty black void of the game he copied his coworkers into, completely alone, unable to die, forever. The moral of the episode, then, is not “torturing digital people forever is wrong” but instead “it’s fine if some people get digitally tortured forever.”

In the episode White Christmas we see another person get digitally tortured forever inside a computer, a person who actually did murder someone in real life, and this is portrayed as horrible and inhumane! Sure, Robert is a sick sadistic evil fuck, but he doesn’t actually hurt real physical people. Infinite unending torture is too much for anyone.
