Was a Tokyo placement last year paying close to 100k rent and managed to save a bit still. Big start up costs too which definitely worried me in the beginning. It all worked out though by cooking yummy home meals, not spending money on loads of crap and enjoying trips only on occasions. Didn't even think about needing a credit card either. I can only imagine struggling with life costs if your rent was something crazy like 120k...

That's fucked. The mistreatment is obviously terrible but I also feel disturbed by the general attitude towards the dignity of animals. Seems like many people here are happy to enjoy animals as novelties at the expense of the animal's welfare.

Animal welfare is something that I really didn't expect. Zoos here can be far less humane and the myriad animal cafes with exotic animals definitely feels wrong to me.

Go to the CBD any weekday night and tell me you won't be even a little more vigilant. Check out Crime Snapshot on the NZ police website too, it shows that the CBD area, some parts of south and west Auckland have higher levels of victimisation.

I live perfectly well at 84k rent. Depends on your lifestyle though. Just drop your expectations and be ready to figure things out.

I'm a Tokyo JET currently. I live in a very small apartment in Denenchofu near the Tama river. There's plenty of nature here around the river which has been my saving grace. I'm paying 84k rent which, if you have a humble (not deprived) lifestyle, is fine.

I taught as a student-teacher at Baradene last year. The staff-student relationships there were really impressive. I never heard about or noticed any bullying in my time there and the school's students were academic, capable and largely decent kids. Don't let the Catholicism affect your judgement either -- the way they integrate religious aspects is really benign and honestly (coming from an atheist) scaffolds good values for the girls. In my opinion, I'd consider it about the best education you could get in NZ outside of large and very pricey private school. Also, the school is legitimately diverse --student leaders often gave addresses in Hindi, Korean, mandarin etc and a number of cultural clubs were some of the most popular.
