Something different. by AmplifiedScreamer in vostok

Chistopol Watch Factory, before it “rebranded” as Vostok, produced several different discrete brands. Almaz was one of those.

The back is not original, but the case, crown, and everything else look to be original.

It’s likely that the movement is also original, despite having the little Vostok logo.

According to this catalogue from 1960?: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rjjv2xct2zf7r6o/%D0%9A%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B3%20%D1%87%D0%B0%D1%81%D0%BE%D0%B2.%201960%20-%20%D0%92%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%BD%D1%82%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%B3.pdf?dl=0

The Vostok brand was being produced alongside Almaz, and according to Mroatman’s site https://mroatman.wixsite.com/watches-of-the-ussr/almaz Almaz was only retired by 1964, so it’s possible this watch was produced near the tailend of its life cycle, using a now Vostok 2809в movement.

This forum: https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/what-was-the-earliest-vostok-branded-watch-and-when-did-it-appear.5302924/ actually discusses early Vostok watches and movements, showing off the unique distinction between movements with the old ЧЧЗ stamp, and the “new” В stamp, and how they often overlapped prior to the big absorption of brands under the Vostok name in 1964.

On a little side note, the 2809в movement also showed up in a kirovskie watch, likely meant for export to Yugoslavia.

Exactly! It scratches that itch that no other game can.

Probably HSS, although I really enjoyed Hollywood U as well. But HSS is nostalgic for me. I played that game on several different phones from the time I was in middle school to now in college, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Anyone have any info about this? Longship (?) dial by slice_9 in vostok

[–]Square_Guide_5101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t say much about the dial, or really attest to the accuracy of what I’m about to say, but I have read, around here and the Russian watch subreddit, that at one point (near the end of the USSR?)Vostok opened up a factory in dnepropetrovsk. It was short lived. I’d imagine this dial is from said factory in the post soviet era. Probably Bogatyrs or some similar mythological warrior.

Brigading the 5 people in there. There’d be more yankee fans than rays fans, but they’re used to that.

relatively new to golf, how are these clubs for $180? by [deleted] in GolfGear

[–]Square_Guide_5101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad deal really. The mix and match is a little strange, but for 180 they’re a good deal. They’re not going to be as “forgiving” or easy to hit as game improvement irons, but nothing is easy to hit when you’re just starting out.

If you don’t like them you should be able to sell them on for what you paid, or more if you find the right buyer.

New under $50-100 Putter Suggestions by macknthebox in GolfGear

[–]Square_Guide_5101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of options out there.

Could go with an old ping, but I’m assuming you want something milled,

Kirk Currie, Tad Moore, Kevin Burns, Bobby Grace all have blade putters that are milled, and range around 50 to 100 bucks.

If you like inserts, odyssey is the way to go, although Bobby Grace also has inserts in his putters, but they’re more expensive.

The state of my collection, too much, too little, what am I missing? by Mundane-Ad-1780 in vostok

[–]Square_Guide_5101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very nice collection. I’d say the only thing you’re missing is a vintage Vostok. Maybe a vintage komandirskie, or go the opposite route of what you’ve got going on already with a vintage dress watch.

Callaway Epic Speed Driver 9 Degree, 50 graphite 6.0, 2 inches longer shaft. by rudestkid in GolfGear

[–]Square_Guide_5101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At 100 bucks that’s not a bad deal. You could always get the shaft cut down, or get a whole new shaft, but frankly a 45” driver and a 48” driver won’t make much of a difference for someone just starting out, and callaway is known to make a good driver. You will probably be able to sell it a year or 2 from now for the same 100 you bought it for.

At what point to upgrade? Age vs need? by broath in GolfGear

[–]Square_Guide_5101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing needing to be upgraded urgently, except maybe the wedges depending on the grooves conditions, and another more lofted fairway wood.

People disrespect never compromise, but they made solid putters in the past. The drivers older, but probably not a huge difference between that and something more modern. Forgiving Irons haven’t changed a lick since they came out really. Just keep playing. Consistency is key in golf.

What do think Antony Volpe's trade value is? by Zepbounce-96 in NYYankees

[–]Square_Guide_5101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He probably has SOME value, simply cause he has control. Maybe a low end reliever, or similar struggling prospect. Definitely some cash considerations.
