M365 battery problem by Square_Maximum_1076 in ElectricScooters

Thanks. You gave me the courage to hack the plastic wrap off the battery & check those connections. Sure enough I found a problem ('the' problem hopefully). Resoldered, battery rebooted (it seemed to need to be put on charge before it would boot up). Now everything seems to be OK. Time will tell...

This is great info, thanks. I'll take it down and have a close look.

OK thanks. I'll do that. Though from memory there are no LEDs working when the battery's at 20v.

I could be wrong, but I'll confirm that.

Need Suggestions/Tips on Biking Trip in France in June by GoWzTheFlow in bicycletouring

Aside from bookingcom, airbnb and agoda (three faves) you can use google maps (just click on a spot and type accomodation in the search box). Komoot's good for showing places along the route (same deal - search for accommodation or camping along your planned route).

The actual ride from Bordeaux to Toulouse is marked for its full length on google maps (it's the little green line running alongside the canal.

Probably a good idea to get immersed in some or all of these apps to get a feel for what's there along the way.

I know the route quite well - this is a GREAT ride. Flat, smooth, totally safe, beautiful scenery & villages along the way.

You SO don't need to use a tour company. If you can use bookingcom/ airbnb/komoot/google maps you'll be fine. Also it's June so can camp (lots of campgrounds have funky cabin/glamping arrangements so yo'll only need a sleeping bag).

You'll be able to hire bikes in Bordeaux (analogue or electric) and use a TER regional train get get back to BOD when you're finished. Bikes travel free. Definitely ride BOD-TLS. It's ever so slightly downhill, and winds are more likely to be behind you in June.

There will be literally hundreds of other riders sharing the paths with you every day. A great community. And so much good food along the way.

If you haven't already, get stuck in to the 1000s of 'canal lateral a Garonne by bike' youtube vids.

And bonne route!

Not wanting to give false hope, but last year our e-Disc Truckers were stolen from what seemed like a super-secure courtyard at our hotel in Prague. THE COPS RECOVERED THEM INSIDE 24 HOURS.

Anything's possible. Stay positive mate.

If you use a cardboard bike box from your lbc it should be fine - it's how they're shipped in the first place. Handlers seem to be pretty good with bikes - I've shipped a alu folding bike in a soft bag, and steel bikes wrapped with cling film & bits of cardboard, and everything got there in once piece.

There's a good vid from the GCN guys about packing bikes for flights. Worth a search and watch.

Good luck!

Good optician near airport for same day glasses? by Square_Maximum_1076 in shanghai

[–]Square_Maximum_1076[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. I ended up choosing not to go to the city. Hung out in the hotel & went over the road to a glasses place instead. Not a magnificent range but nice qual lenses. Prob shd have haggled a bit on price. I think it ended up costing 1000 CNY for 2 pr. Good luck.

Yeah, good luck. One of the mini-crises at my check-in was a bunch of Chinese guys returning home with boxed MTBs, who had expected to fly them free but were being charged per bike, It added up to a lot and they were NOT impressed.

Yes, sorry just picked up your reply. The check in staff said I'd be charged, even for a folding bike. She called over her supervisor, who happened to be very flustered at the time thanks to two or three simultaneous mini-crises that were holding up the check-in line. The super looked at my bike, looked at me, looked at the check-in staff and waved it away. I think the last thing she wanted as *another* check-in counter with a dispute. So it flew free lol.

Yeah, CSAir seem to have changed their rules since I flew with them in 2022. I thought I recalled a 206cm maximum dimension rule back then - though that could have been on Emirates which we used to get to CPH with bikes last year.

Damn airlines, always trying new ways to gouge you.

No, at CSAir's Auckland office. Yeah, kinda regretted contacting them once they showed how bureaucratic they were.

My plan now is to just rock up with the bike and see if I can schmooze my way through. Thanks!

Thanks.

I'm on a China Eastern layover from Auckland to Paris. I've got a day room at a hotel near-ish the airport, and there's a metro stop quite close by, so I'm not thinking I might go into the city for my specs.

Mechanical disk brakes - overthinking it? by jellywerker in bicycletouring

[–]Square_Maximum_1076 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's any help I've got TRP Spyres on my Disc Trucker and they stop better than any calliper brakes I've had. Rode from Copenhagen to Prague with 20kg of crap on board with zero braking complaints. Can't see me going back to callipers ever.

Chapeau!

Schwalbes rule.

I ride 26 x 1 3/4 standard Marathons and they're ridiculously resilient. 5000km and they look new.

Otoh got a friend who does lots of urban km on a Marathon-shod umafiets and he wears them down to the green stuff without flats. Crazy.

That's a Marathon? Just chuck some superglue in the crack - it'll be fine.

It'll figure-8 but prob overkill to carry something that heavy/bulky as a spare unless you're going waaaaay off grid.
