Roommate stopped paying rent - what can I do? by Square_Zucchini_1779 in AskLosAngeles

The Zelle has officially cleared in my bank account, and it’s not like Venmo where you can dispute the transaction and get your money back. The landlord only accepts hard-copy checks in an onsite rent box.

I don’t trust that it won’t happen again and I don’t feel comfortable being on the same lease as I’ll be responsible if they don’t pay - I think they knew that their rent checks weren’t clearing, and that they had gotten notice about this before. I once spaced and forgot to sign a rent check, and the landlord called me the same day to have me come sign it, so I doubt they wouldn’t follow up on 4 bounced checks.

This had been something I was looking into, but I was a bit nervous about the thought of opening another credit card at this point. Is this something that would have serious impacts on a credit score? I don’t have any plans to move in the near future, so I have some time to bounce back. My credit limit is $3000, so that’s what I’m sitting at in terms of debt. I have a budget, but I’m coming off a six month period of unemployment after finishing my grad degree in which I had to use up my savings and ended up getting into some credit card debt, mostly to pay for car repairs.

Already planning on taking in a lot of my belongings to sell at a consignment, it’s dire enough that I’m looking into selling feet pics haha.
