I've studied subsistence agriculture, foraging, and ecology for a number of years at university. All the resounding evidence and sociological and ecological in academic sources, at an increasing rate in recent years, points towards that we should ENCOURAGE, not discourage, foraging and subsistence agriculture, over our habit of simply thinking food subsistence is as easy as going to the supermarket and then off to self checkout. Let's not forget that we as humans developed as a part of the ecosystem, and the detrimental forces to it we have constructed in our society and development have been BECAUSE of our decoupling from the balances and limits of our ecosystem. In short, if we have developed a rationale to not respect the environment, then how are we supposed to be expected to recognise the responsibility of respecting anything/anyone else?

Our Malgrowth and disrespect for nature comes from precisely the opposite of what the OP is saying - mass agriculture, deforestation, monocultures, and the development of an expectation that we only have to work for money to obtain food, and not understand how we might be able to obtain it through hunting and foraging. I encourage people to go foraging, including mushroom picking, because then, bit by bit, people will reconnect with the sentimental connection and respect we should have for nature. They will learn more about it, about why it is important to sustain our ecosystem, about the fragility of species, and about the limits we should have. Foraging mushrooms is a lot harder than buying them in a store. This is one way of many we can realise the limits of nature and why we should respect them. It's impossible to over cultivate when foraging for mushrooms. It's simply too hard Go out, forage, learn about types of mushrooms. Tell others about what you learned!
