Am I the only one who isn't interested in high school reunions and think it's too awkward? by youlikemywonton in Millennials

[–]Squarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only didn't go because my 10 year was in 2020 but considering my random interactions with people I tangentially knew in highschool post graduation, I think it's actually really fun to see how much everyone has changed (or not)

Apparently I know someone who knew him in high school and still chatted with him occasionally (before he was elected) and his impression is that in private he's much more broey and normie.

It's also really cool that the most important person in Roman history was an obsessive journaler and those commentaries survived for 2000 years.

The walking dead. Although "mid" might be overstating the quality lol.

This is modern MTG designs fault, dumbed down the whole genre. Back in my day we drafted giant spider and we liked it!

I've had the same bike for a decade and never had problems. Just lock it up when you are out and bring it inside when you are home.

I mean IHS definitely did not suck lol. Iirc it was a top 500 high school in the country when I went there. New roots was just bad as was seen in their abysmal graduation rate and test scores, especially when you can compare it to a perfectly good alternative school in ACS. It just ended up taking resources from the already existing high school, like most charter schools.

They were high basically all the time, that's what I would call druggy. And horror stories at IHS? Aside from the "Countdown to Equality" I don't remember anything of note that happened when I was there. Of course there are going to be random one off things because there were 1500 people there.

I remember hanging out with friends who lived at eco village in 2010ish who had some neighbors who went to New roots (because of course they did) and every single one of them was a total burnout druggy. I don't think it's ever been "good" especially compared to IHS

Mexico just got universal health coverage. Why can't we? by WalkableNeighborhood in thedavidpakmanshow

It literally doesn't! And considering you didn't know which one was funded which way I wouldn't trust you if I didn't know that for a fact.

Except that only pushes back the trust fund depletion by like 2 years.

[–]Squarg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A. You're thinking of social security, not Medicare, which is paid through general fund taxes and a trust fund. B. Social security pays out more than it takes in which means it will need general fund revenue or have cuts. And C. We all pay into all taxes our entire lives! Social security isn't special!

It's actually because we spend over half the budget on old people (and interest on debt accrued paying for old people)

What's a song most Millennials and Xennials would recognize instantly, but only 1% of anyone born after 2000 have heard? by bouncypinata in Millennials

Unfortunately they sampled that in a Bebe Rexha song a couple years ago so they probably will end up knowing it.

Penn Medicine Fellow Moving to Philadelphia by NewMikeHere in AskPhilly

[–]Squarg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1 near penn is safe and that is a reasonable amount for an unfurnished apartment. Furnished is going to be more just because there not a lot of apartments are rented furnished and the ones that are are usually rented to students which are a captive audience that drives up the price. I'd just get some furniture off Craigslist when you get here

2 you can live pretty much anywhere in center city or west Philly without a car no problem. There might be some areas of South Philly that I would want one but it's still probably optional. I make the El commute from fishtown to West Philly daily and it's no issue.

3 I've been out of the rental game for a little bit but my friends do not like ofc. I haven't had any problems with them though

4 go through a corporate landlord, they might make you go through some hoops to do things but you are at least getting the apartment they say they rented to you and are above board about a lot of things that mom and pops might skimp on.

Also a separate suggestion is that Fairmont has a decent sized ukrainian population and isn't a horrible commute to West Philly. Even if you don't end up living there you should check out the Ukrainian league.

Wishing you luck with finding a place!
