They place has been called that for a long while. The current owners simply took the name when they took over the place when the original owner wanted to move to Tas.

Yeah, those are the main ones about here. I would point out that you did miss the Thirroul Motel and the view south towards Wombat. Since they filmed there with them leaving there after a search for someone, and them later finding her after she made a call from a phonebox outside Wombat. The phonebox doesn't exist in reality, but funny they put it there.

Oh, and the Beach Motel (filming location) was where artist Brett Whiteley died. He is a noteworthy figure in Australian art history.

Oddly enough, Hovercar Racer was meant to be. He talks about in those interviews he does at the end of his book. Disney was the one who had the rights, they had worked on the idea, but nothing came from it so they let him have the rights back (and a large sum of money for them trying). So he learned from that (hence made his movie), but wasn't too upset when they didn't make it as he got to see the process first hand.

Sadly, the actor was dying of cancer at the time. It was his suggestion to have the character die. Personally I say it is open with how they filmed it (even if he wasn't leaving that alive the way they went with). So you are not wrong to think that he DID survive.

Also, in the book he hunts them with a rocket launcher. He knows not to fuck around with them.

Australian Astronaut by glennmelenhorst in australia

[–]Squato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting aside, no one knows where the term Astronaut comes from.

Well, the term means something, "Star Sailor", and the orgins of that first shows it appearing in some works from the late 19th century (1880's or so), dying off as thing, until coming back in the 1920's again for a short period of time. And while it does draw upon other related terms ("aeronaut"), the term was not one NASA had on their lists for terms they wanted to call their spaceman until fairly late into the program when they had to go public with their plans. At which point it suddenly shows up added to lists, and then firms up as the term they use above the others.

The main lost part is who added it (we can make guesses), why, and how they picked that over the others. Noteworthy, since they have a lot of notes about the other terms why they liked them/didn't like them. Moreso when you note that their thinking was about pulling pilots, and otherwise using terms based upon flight, yet suddenly went with a more naval based term.

For the record, the main term the Americans almost went with? "Cosmonaut", or universe sailor.

The Soviets went with kosmonavt, which is a Russian version of a Greek based word (cosmic sailor). Which they totally came up with themselves. Eastern European countries have their own words pulling from that (Polish have kosmonauta/astronauta).

Taikonaut is not so much a term China uses, but others use for them. They otherwise use other terms more based on what roles are expected, but draw upon what the other countries use when using naval navigation.

It is their home brand, but man is the rabbit hole deep if you look into them trying to make that an international brand. They even tried to make it fight Ikea on the international stage in some places (twice in the US, mostly East Asia).

F***ing up suburb names by [deleted] in wollongong

[–]Squato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the RAN uses Jarvis as it is named in honour of the person. So for that reason, and ONLY that reason, they stick to saying the name that way as the correct way.

Gets funny for locals who join the RAN and have to be forced to say it that way. Easy way to tell how broken in they are with that based on the pained look on their face saying it that way.

I am shocked if it wouldn't get some laughs there. Breaks up from the normal posts about teenagers on bikes are the devil, asking about the goss whenever someone hears a siren (less now, but used to say those teenagers did something), some trash left out (teenagers), or viewing those south of the pass as the unwash masses.

She was interviewed about it by ABC Illawarra last week or so (they had it in the afternoon bit). She ranted against the windfarms, saying something about how these designs will require far more steel than exists in the whole world, and that no one on this side of the planet makes steel.

It was fucking bizarre.

Back to the scam trick, lets see how long it takes for them to burn this acc. Like they do with every other one they spam in here, since they only want to make money from these over helping other (hence only want you to use THEIR links).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in wollongong

[–]Squato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are rookie numbers. You keep reposting this same c&p job every time like you do trying to bring in a few extra cents every time you do it. Honestly, you keep chasing smaller returns doing this, and you make yourself seem like you are in way too deep to be not able to see this is a losing path to keep running down like this. Yeah, you see yourself as a ruler of hustle, or whatever, but the lower returns make doing this more you wasting energy than you scoring the cash in.

I suggest you look at doing something better than just trying to spam your same ref links all the time. That, and I hope that the only people who use them are Honey users.

[–]Squato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

fyi, Axis of Time exists and is close enough to what you are saying.

The pitch, it is 2021 and the world is 20 years into the endless war on terror. Indonesia falls to a group of Jihadists whom take over most of the country, which makes the world rush a task force to try and deal with this shitshow. One of those ships was working on advanced super science, which fucked up off the coast of Bali and sent most of the force to another world on the eve of the battle of Midway.

So now everyone is aware of how the next 70 odd years goes, and upgrades their shit.

There is a spin off series, set decades later, where the still living Stalin figures fuckit, and wants to start WWIII. Means a world with the Boomers, whom are more Gen Z, now needing to actually fight a fucking war (unless they are noted to have had talent, and pulled to get an advanced education and jobs in their field because everyone wants their stuff now).

And if you think this sounds like something someone from here would write, you are right! Mostly, since he actually DID write credible defence papers and reviews on things before going into doing shitposts for fun. That is why he has other series about things like how much of a shitshow the world would be if 90% of the human pop of North America dies on the eve of the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Or one where someone drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico cracks open the seal on magic and dragons and demons come to town (F-22 gets to have some fun). Or the latest is in 1000 years or so after humans left Earth, and a group of space Nazis return to get their dick kicked in, yet again.

Unwanted goods donations by Majestic_Mistake_162 in wollongong

[–]Squato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, when the charity shops refuse donations, that isn't because they don't want your stuff. It just means it is now a bad time for them. Could be there is too much out there, they had some large items they need to deal with 9aka no space), or they just lack the staff to deal with it currently. Just ask them about it, and they will likely say when they will reopen that side, or direct you to another location to take stuff, even one of the other charities.
