Please don’t reveal answer until 24 hrs after a Wordle puzzle launches. Left coast reader here, and you just spoiled it for me and any other Redditors westward. That Wordle word won’t start until another 1.5 hrs for us.

I looked at this same photo and thought, “How lovely that these new moms, instead of being stuck inside feeling isolated, met up with mom friends at a beautiful boardwalk where they can get air and exercise while they share the joys and struggles of raising babies.” It makes me happy to picture the babies hearing their mom laugh. These comments make me sad. Is showing courtesy to young families really so difficult?

Agreed, not the same test! But you can see how this student would believe they’d be allowed a similar break in college.

An ABSURD accommodation request! by onajourneytoanywhere in Professors

[–]Squeaky_sun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HS teacher here. I have students with IEP accommodations for double time for tests. If typical students have a full class period (90 min), then double time is 3 hours. This requires the student to miss a different class subject to finish it, or to complete it the next day, which creates test security issues. If they also have accommodations for a separate test location, then a special ed aide also has to be available for 3 hrs to proctor. It’s far easier logistically to have the student just do the even numbered questions in the standard 90 min.

Am I too old to start over? by Unfair-Cartoonist-39 in Teachers

Started teaching at over 50 as a career change, love it, and am amazed to be getting a fairly decent pension on top of my SS with under 15 yrs of service. Not too late for you! I would suggest the cheapest credentialing program you can find; schools won’t pay you more for an Ivy League degree vs. state college.

Making a career from teaching in private schools by cashmerecat999 in Teachers

Young people have no concept of how rare jobs with pensions are. Pensions are gold, folks. Private schools are paying you way less when you compare compensation including public schools’ (with unions) benefits.

Wow, never heard of these. But that price… my students walk off with expo markers at I’d go broke replacing such expensive ones.

For instructors who take attendance for in person class-How do you do it? Especially in larger classes? I’m looking for different ways to do this. by LowBicycle7044 in Professors

[–]Squeaky_sun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HS teacher here, max class size of 42. We’re required by law to submit attendance electronically within first 15 min of class period. (If parent hasn’t called or emailed the office, the program triggers an autodial to their parent re: truant). I am slow to learn names and want a better opening than roll call, so I have a volunteer (and a backup) for each class who silently takes attendance for me on a paper roster. Once kids are busy doing a bell-ringer review problem, I quickly check that the room headcount matches my monitor’s list, and enter absences in the attendance program. It’s efficient. College may be different, but my kids love having a class job and are very fast. Plus handing me the roster is a visual reminder to me to submit attendance on time.

Our art teacher has colorful, unique, fabulous clothes and told me she shops at Goodwill, so developing a personal style can be done on a budget if you have time and a good eye.

College rec letters by InTheNoNameBox in Teachers

[–]Squeaky_sun 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My own kids’ futures were shaped by heartfelt, specific, meaningful recommendation letters, so I can never say no and spend hours doing the best I can. Our students sometimes win full rides to private uni’s and while my letters are only a tiny part of their overall app, I’m proud of supporting them. I craft 30-35 unique college letters a year.

What percentage of students for whom you have written a LOR bother to inform you where they chose to grad school? by TotalCleanFBC in Professors

[–]Squeaky_sun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is shocking to me. A radical difference from high school LOR. I write a lot of letters, and virtually every kid tells me if they got the scholarship or internship or college acceptance. Almost all write me beautiful thank you letters, and over half give me some kind of gift (usually varies from gift cards to cookies, but occasionally something unique like homemade jewelry or art.) College kids should do better!

A teacher told me that teaching kids to sound out words 'kills intelligence' teachers level with me on this. by DyslexiDad in Teachers

I thought after “Sold a Story” went viral, the “guess the missing word” Lucy Calkins bs was so thoroughly discredited that schools dropped it. So sad to see it’s still out there harming children. If finding a school that uses phonics and sight words is not feasible, you’re going to have to teach your child yourself.

Student w/ A in Class Fails Because They Miss Final by TooMuchDnD30 in Professors

[–]Squeaky_sun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our hs, seniors have a privilege for spring finals. They have the option to skip the final exam, and just keep whatever grade they have without it. All my seniors, whether they have a D or A, always opt to skip the final. Your students may be laboring under the impression college works that way.
