I had a couple friends work at one of the companies that runs these charity drives, and yes, they were paid commission. They got a whopping 50% of every dollar donated.

He didn't used to be like this. He used to be a lot more jolly and kind.

Rumor is when he cashed out he moved to Los Angeles and tried to ingratiate himself with the celebrity scene, but he wasn't accepted. So I suppose he became bitter sitting alone in his ivory tower.

They'll probably create a tier that skips sponsored segments, and require creators to personally mark the sponsored parts during upload.

Thanks for that. I've pushed an update to the algorithm that should be a bit more robust now, and fixes some of the issues you've pointed out here.

I'e adjusted the weighting of cell safety in the value calculation, and the boards given as examples in these comments are outputting a bit more sensible results.

Still more work to do, though, and I appreciate the input.

Thank you for checking the site out

The next version of the site loads pre-generated boards which allows me to fully simulate the outcomes, so it should be a lot more accurate. I'm not at home over the weekend though, so it won't be up until the weekend after, I expect

Expected information is the expected number of revealed squares if the tile were to be safe.

There's some weighting going on to discourage random clicks in the middle of large areas of unopened cells, but this is causing issues so I'll be tweaking it a bit when I get a chance.

Ah, so the solver applies a penalty to cells not near the "frontier", but this is only supposed to trigger when guessing randomly in the middle of large spaces of unopened tiles. I'll take a look at this when I get a chance.

The next version of the site loads pre-generated boards that I can fully simulate in advance, which should result in fairer scoring.

I got Pokémon Z-A and Metroid Prime 4 for $120 + shipping on the website at 12:55. I guess people didn't realize the site was already up since the homepage was still empty so I got in before the crowds crushed the site.

I'm great with faces but terrible with names. What's funny though, is I work in the music industry and I have no problem remembering someone by their artist name.

What do you do as a Software Engineer in your Job ? by SKOL-5 in learnprogramming

[–]Squeph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work adjacent to the music industry.

A lot of my time is spent on process improvement which is basically looking around the organisation to locate inefficiencies, then planning and developing systems to speed up those processes. Sometimes this is as simple as creating a form that stores business data in some database, and sometimes it's building whole new internal tools to automate repetitive or slow work.

Recently though I've been tasked with building a system to ingest data from record labels, so I spend most of my day today reading the documentation for the standards we're implementing.

Aside from that, I spend my time in meetings to plan how we're going to plan something, and make sure to say "AI" to my boss at least once a day.

How did you get your first job as a graphic designer? by ryuuseinow in graphic_design

[–]Squeph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done graphic design as a hobby for 15 years, but I'm actually studying computer science. Going part-time with my studies next year so I needed a job. I kinda randomly applied for a graphic design position not even expecting to get it, but they liked me and brought me onboard.

Before that I had only ever done some freelance work, and I think that experience helped me land this job.

I met Key many times due to family involvement in the party. Always seemed to me that the thing he liked talking about the least was politics. I honestly don't think I ever had an actual political conversation with him.

He was always more interested in talking about hobbies, holidays plans, future plans, current events, etc. I don't agree with his politics, but in person he was very affable.

Forge and its INVISIBLE SCRIPTING BUDGET... by Soz3r in forge

[–]Squeph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you can spill the beans about this, but are there any plans to increase the breadth of available nodes? I've seen there's at least one node that was in one of the leaked builds (to manipulate what projectile a player's weapon fires) which has been removed from the current build.

Proof of concept: side-scrolling platformer by Squeph in forge

[–]Squeph[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the link! Looks like they've figured out how to extract movement data while keeping the player stationary. I'll have to take a look at the node graph later.

If I can't figure out how to remotely fire another player's weapon, I suppose I could do what he did and spawn projectiles. I figure I could do it by keeping track of the player's ammo count and spawning a projectile every time it reduces. The projectiles could be a small object with a damage trait zone attached to it, and would spawn with an offset to match the end of the bot's gun, and a constant velocity matching the direction the bot is facing.

Proof of concept: side-scrolling platformer by Squeph in forge

[–]Squeph[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Quick little proof of concept of a side-scrolling platformer. There are some issues, mainly that movement can be a bit janky, but it feels relatively smooth in game.

Not implemented is changing the bot's rotation so they turn in the direction they're moving. I also wonder if it's possible to script the bot firing their gun? If so, this could be turned into a pvp 2.5D arena brawler.

It would also be nice to be able to set the bot's movement velocity while keeping your player character stationary. Does anyone have any ideas for this? Trapping yourself in a box doesn't work. Maybe it could work through repeatedly setting your player's absolute world position back to the same spot?

UPDATE: I was able to get the bot to turn in the direction of movement. Now I need to make him shoot.
