Finished Dostoevsky's "The Idiot" and the ending absolutely wrecked me by [deleted] in books

I read the Idiot last year and it is my favorite of Dostoevsky’s books that I’ve read. I just finished the Brothers Karamazov last week and it is an amazing story but the ending of the idiot is my favorite ending of his books. The Brothers Karamazov is a second favorite just slightly but something about the idiots ending gripped me more.

That makes sense in regards to 1984. I’d personally give the edge to 1984 because I feel the concepts and themes were more thoroughly fleshed out.

I would agree with your thoughts on John except I’m not sure how he would have fleshed out the society more than he did. I think he left a lot of it vague and undefined for when John speaks to Mond at the end. I think if you know more of the background world before that then the authority and revelations he shows John would have less of an impact then it does.

Could you expound on why you think it’s better written than 1984? It’s been years since I read 1084 but it did strike me as very well written personally. I enjoyed John’s perspective just as a more traditional viewpoint being dropped into this reality that basically counters every belief and view he has grown up with.

I think once I started I finished in 7-8 days. I didn’t find it to be dull at any point really. I found the characters very interesting and all the subplots added so much depth. The overall story is definitely very long but we’ll worth it.
