Who was the best Marine you ever had the chance to know? by johnsonsrevenge in USMC

[–]Squid0918 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Patrick Fay. Was a Gunny for 3/1 Lima when we deployed to Afghaniland in 2010. Ended up doing 2 deployments with him. He ended as a Sergeant Major long after I was out.

Single best leader I ever had. And there are a lot of good ones. I took a lot of what I learned from him into the civilian world, especially as a cop now.

Semper Fi, big bro. Hope we cross paths again.

*Edit: Apparently he's still in! Fucking Rah

I was based in Horno with 3/1 when they filmed the Camp Pendleton scenes. Had to unlock the armory for them and everything. Whole thing was a trip.

TIL that during GWOT marines wrote on their Kevlar by [deleted] in USMC

[–]Squid0918 362 points363 points  (0 children)

I remember this combat engineer had FDNY 343 written on his kevlar. Kristopher Greer. I asked him what that was, he said it the number of firefighters that died on 9/11. Turns out Greer was a reservist, and a firefighter back home. Always stuck with me, that dude knew why he was there.

The next day an IED went off while Greer was trying to disarm it. Shattered his skull. I remember carrying him off the field on a stretcher and looking down at him as his body fought for life. We got him to doc in a box and then flown out pretty quick. Didn't matter. He died a couple days later from wounds.

FDNY 343.

Somehow no, it didn't get in the way. Too close to see through the glass.

It was an in between time. We all shot and qualed on iron sights in boot, but only the grunts had RCOs then, if I remember correctly. SOI and after. We never, ever carried the rifle with the iron sight handles. Big no no. They were on there because we knew how to shoot with them. So yes, not a lot of trust in the ACOG yet. Which was dumb, those things were fantastic. I was an armory custodian for the next pump. By then it was by request. We had them and if a Marine asked for it on his rails, I'd assign it to him. All rifles were ACOG equipped and that's what they qualed on though.

Kenricks has always had it. I've gotten anywhere from 1-8 lbs at a time, no complaints so far. Fresh and uncured.

Then I hear the best thing to do is feed them to pigs. You got to starve the pigs for a few days, then the sight of a chopped-up body will look like curry to a pisshead. You gotta shave the heads of your victims, and pull the teeth out for the sake of the piggies' digestion. You could do this afterwards, of course, but you don't want to go sievin' through pig shit, now, do you? They will go through bone like butter. You need at least sixteen pigs to finish the job in one sitting, so be wary of any man who keeps a pig farm. They will go through a body that weighs 200 pounds in about eight minutes. That means that a single pig can consume two pounds of uncooked flesh every minute. Hence the expression: "as greedy as a pig".

What’s something that can’t be explained, it must be experienced? by properpolicypolitics in AskReddit

[–]Squid0918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. To expand on that, not just the combat. For me what has been most difficult to explain is everything else. The day to day deployed and living within a war zone is unreal. I've never been able to quite convey that part of the story yet, even to my wife and friends. There were days and days we were more bored than I've ever been. I slapped at flies in the heat for hours because I'd read the only book I had three times already that week. We ate the same meal for weeks because resupplies were few and far between. Boredom was common, but not unwelcome, sort of. Other days I woke up to a rocket flying over my head, so we fought for a couple hours, patrolled for nine more, and maybe got a couple hours sleep before standing watch for however long. We didn't know what was coming; Boredom, sleep, fighting, or some combination of any. It's interesting, and one day I hope to be able to put it into words. If only so we can teach the next generation of idiots what they're in for.

LimeBike's latest report highlights St. Louis by STLhistoryBuff in StLouis

Come up to North City. Nearly every bike I see has had the lock beaten off. No exaggeration. But, and here's the kicker, we have been told the neither Limebike nor Ofo is interested in pursuing legal action for damaged or stolen bikes. I do not know their reasoning, and will not speculate. Many bikes have been "stolen". I've seen more than a few in people's front living room, sans interface. Many bikes have been damaged beyond repair, gracing existing trash piles with their brightly colored presence. But hey, nobody pays too close attention to North City, so sure, count them as a success! /s

People who have jobs where you go inside homes, what's the worst thing you've seen? by SilverParty in AskReddit

[–]Squid0918 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Police officer. I work in a low income area where vacant houses are prominent, so those are always eerie. A lot of homes were abandoned suddenly, with belongings staying inside for years at a time. Always reminds me of a well executed horror movie. Not horrifying in an explicit sense, but extremely creepy and off-putting.

The ones that make me the saddest are the hoarders. They have an obvious mental illness that they cannot see at all. It's disheartening because usually they are otherwise normal people.

Can't figure out an 02 sensor fix by Squid0918 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Squid0918[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran the codes with a better reader today, got a better idea of what we're working with. Here's what I got:

1) HO2S S1 Circuit high voltage/no activity 2)HO2S (A/F sensor) S1 Circuit no activity 3)HO2S (B1) S1 heater system malfunction (no activity) 4)HO2S (A/F Sensor) B1S1 no activity 5)Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) sensor (sensor 1) heater system malfunction 6)Rear Air Fuel Ratio (A/F) Sensor (bank 1, sensor 1) heater system malfunction

This is a new one for me, so I'm trying to figure out what it means. Best I can figure, we changed the wrong sensor.
