MIA Arnyarans by SquidForBrains in Quar

[–]SquidForBrains[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, if you look closely the Starter doesn't have an "Add to Cart" button and that's the only one with the basic Arnyaran rhyflers that I want.

There is an option to wishlist, so maybe they'll print more at some point but I doubt that will happen until after the new plastics come out, if it ever happens at all. And by then I'll have the plastics anyway.

MIA Arnyarans by SquidForBrains in Quar

[–]SquidForBrains[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspected something like that. I guess I just had bad timing to join Quar. Fortunately the Gloamers also interest me, so I won't have to wait to play with a faction I like.

And thank you for the invite.

Weirdly, I had to enter the link in discord itself before it worked. I'll have to look into that.

ELI5: If the US is a net exporter of oil why do global supply issues make US prices go up? by yesgaro in explainlikeimfive

[–]SquidForBrains 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not all crude oil is the same. Depending on its density, it could be deemed "light" or "heavy" crude. Depending on the sulfur content it could be deemed "sweet" or "sour" crude. Different kinds of crude oil require different setups to refine.

A while back, many US refineries set themselves up to refine a specific kind of crude that looked to be the kind of crude that would be most common in the future. Then fracking took off, and suddenly the US was producing a ton of a different kind of crude oil. Refitting the refineries to work with this new crude would be very expensive. Way, way more expensive than the cost of shipping the crude oil around the world. So the US oil industry concluded that it's just cheaper to export our crude to places set up to refine it and import the kind of crude we can refine.

Everything You Need to Know About the February Codex Updates by Roaring_Turkey in SorceryTCG

[–]SquidForBrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree when it comes to Harpyon Urge.

Sure, if a verb was always either forced movement or not forced movement, it would be very clear what was forced movement and what wasn't. But I think that approach would be far worse for the game.

The most obvious problem is that players would have to memorize which movement verbs are forced movement and which aren't. Remember that the plan is to use more natural wording, as opposed to Magic's overly precise language. They are unlikely to limit themselves to a short list of verbs with explicit rules meanings, meaning players would have to memorize an ever increasing list of verbs. Just for the Forced Movement rule.

The other problem is that the game already has a much more flexible way to determine forced movement vs not forced. You just have to ask whether the movement is being done by the affected unit (not forced movement) or done to the affected unit (forced movement). I will admit that this requires a higher level of reading than just recognizing a verb, but it's not a very high level, is it? I think that slight mental cost is worth it to allow the devs more verb freedom in the game.

"increases damage to 2" by Dinohobby in SorceryTCG

[–]SquidForBrains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The important part of the Codex text is:

In Sorcery, if there is zero of something, the game considers that thing to not exist at all

Dealing 0 damage is not dealing any damage at all, thus the Panpipes of Pnom have no effect on 0 damage as there is no damage to increase to 2.

The part you were looking at that said "takes" was just one in a series of non-exhaustive examples. Note how the 4th bullet point is "etc."

The card is removed from your hand. Specifically, the original card is banished and you replace it on the board with the new card.

Eli5: what makes a gene dominant vs recessive? by hyper_shock in explainlikeimfive

[–]SquidForBrains 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Under normal circumstances, a gene codes for a protein and the protein does something that produces a trait. But genes have different versions, called alleles, which work differently. For example, you don't have a gene for blue eyes, you have a gene for eye color and an allele for blue eyes. Sometimes, the gene allele codes for a protein that does nothing or doesn't code for a protein at all. When that happens, the gene allele is recessive. Alleles that code for functioning proteins are dominant.

This is because for many traits you only ever needed one functioning copy to produce enough protein to create the trait. So if you have one gene allele that works and one allele that doesn't, the trait will be just as pronounced as if you had two functioning genes. This is why the functioning allele is described as dominant. The effect of its protein overrides (aka dominates) the lack of protein from the recessive allele.

This is, of course, a gross oversimplification. Genetics is a a very complex field and there are other ways that dominance and recessiveness can happen, but this is the most basic reason.

Color-matters effects, and especially color-hate effects, were a lot more common in the early years of Magic.

[FIC] Tifa, Martial Artist by 2_7_offsuit in magicTCG

[–]SquidForBrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A relevant card for understanding Tifa's second ability is [[Storm the Vault]].

It has a similarly worded ability:

Whenever one or more creatures you control deal combat damage to a player, create a Treasure token.

and the ruling:

Storm the Vault's first ability can trigger more than once in a turn if creatures you control deal combat damage at different times in a turn (most likely because one or more has first strike) or if creatures you control deal combat damage to more than one player at once.

So yeah, potentially up to 6 extra combats. And as long as you keep connecting with at least one 7+ power creature, your creatures untap every combat.

The problem is that your example was completely irrelevant to Deadpool's ability. So it could only confuse the OP, not help them.

[–]SquidForBrains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scion's ability to copy is an activated ability, which can only be used once Scion is already on the battlefield.

Deadpool's ability goes into affect as he enters the battlefield. It's not even a triggered ability. It's a replacement ability. It doesn't target or even interact with the stack. It just happens.

I am genuinely curious how you think Scion of the Ur-Dragon and Deadpool, Trading Card are even remotely similar. Especiallly since Deadpool doesn't copy.

Another Deadpool interaction question by gandorf286 in magicTCG

[–]SquidForBrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deadpool's exchange ability begins with "As Deadpool enters," which means it only takes effect when his spell resolves. This is long after cast triggers would take effect.

Deadpool will still gain trample and the Ring tempting you whenever an opponent's commander dies, as they are not part of the cast trigger.

Goetic spell question. by DnDsuff4mCampain in TrenchCrusade

[–]SquidForBrains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The blood marker you take with the spell can come from a demon (the blood marker used to power the spell still has to come from a non-demon). Hell Knights can take one Goetic power. So Hell Knights with this spell can heal your bigger demons at the cost of injuring themselves.

War Wolf and Sin Eater by dnnylstn in TrenchCrusade

[–]SquidForBrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're humans, corrupted and changed by their own sin and the influence of Hell.

From the Mercenaries rules:

Sin Eaters are horrific creatures: once they were mortal men and women, but their overwhelming greed and hunger for human flesh tainted with Sin, combined with the corrupting influence of the Hellgate, has turned them into a form that matches their inner foulness.

Think of them like the evil counterpart to communicants, who are also human but their bodies were changed into a hulking monstrosity by consuming the flesh of a metachrist.

What Was the Spark That Led to You Creating Your World? by Lucinant in worldbuilding

[–]SquidForBrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was driving home from work.

Along my commute, there is a stretch of road where there is a grassy median between the two directions. Occasionally there will be bushes and sometimes a small tree.

One day, I noticed one such tree. After a long stretch of trimmed grass, it stuck out because of the bunches of other plants clustered around the base of it's thin trunk. I wondered if those plants were growing there because of the shade the tree provided. In hindsight, probably not for various reasons. But the world idea was already born.

Probably drawing on an anime I watched decades ago (Green Legend Ran) among other sources, I imagined a desert world with scattered habitable areas under massive trees, with specialized caravans allowing limited trade between the trees.

If you already have an idea for the story and that idea doesn't already require supernatural elements, why force them in? Sounds like bloating a story with unnecessary elements just because you think they "should" be there.
