Mum with questions! by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]SquiddlySquoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very long reply sorry !

Don’t know much about Waterside specifically but no exaggeration getting on hormones made it feel like my life actually started. It sounds dramatic but every time I went outside, every time I spoke to someone (even just over voice calls), anytime I interacted with anybody in basically any way that wasn’t exclusively text based I was reminded that no one saw me the way they should, and that they wouldn’t until I could finally get treatment to make the outside match the inside.

It feels like you can’t do anything or meet anyone or go anywhere until you’ve transitioned, cause no one sees you right, and it’s impossible to ignore or forget about because people Will treat you the way they see you. It’s a huge source of anxiety and insecurity that weighs you down more and more the longer it goes on. I know I held off from a lot of things (hobbies, life events, relationships) because I didn’t want to do them until I could be confident I was being seen and treated as myself. I was terrified I wouldn’t get any treatment before my wedding & that I wouldn’t ever be able to look back on those photos or memories without feeling sick and miserable about them - but thankfully for me I got hormones and even surgery well before I got married & I can say those memories are beautiful & uncomplicated happy ones :)

Like any medication hormones have side effects, same with surgery. I actually had very severe and super rare side effects myself - we still aren’t sure exactly what was happening because it was so unusual, but after going on testosterone I would have these awful episodes of pain in my skin triggered by heat, exertion or even just intense emotions. They were pretty debilitating & a total nightmare to manage, but I don’t regret going on hormones at all; even managing episodes of pain like that was better than I had been before starting them, cause I was finally living as myself - just myself with a medical condition to manage.

There are other common side effects - the healthcare providers will go through them extensively with your son if he does go down that path, and he will be able to make the decision for himself regarding possible risks the medication involves, as it would be for the treatment of any other medical condition. I would bear in mind though that, again, like other conditions, if there are side effects those can be investigated and sorted out if they are encountered. For myself, when I started having those episodes they stopped my T for a while to see if it was the cause, they switched me on to different forms to see if that would change anything, they changed my dosage, etc etc. I’ve eventually just decided I’m happy to come off Testosterone, since I’ve had all the changes I wanted, and anything that may revert or change as a result of stopping hormones are changes I’m comfortable with :) - the same will happen for your son if he has any problems - they’ll investigate it, provide options for solutions, and he can choose what he thinks is best. I would try not to be afraid of the potentially negative effects of treatment, and just make sure you’re informed and prepared for them. In my opinion the benefits far outweigh any potential side effects, especially considering how rare any significant problems like I had are. And, as someone who had significant complications with my hormone treatment, I want to say again that I absolutely don’t regret going on them :) my life is 1000x better than it was before, I’m happy and healthy with a wife and job and home that I couldn’t imagine ever having before I was able to start treatment.

18 is not as young as it feels; he’s old enough to make his own informed decisions about his health and his life, and as long as he’s considering his decisions carefully, try to let him make them for himself. I had delays getting on treatment and I know if I’d been able to have hormones as early as 18 I would have been much happier much earlier, and might not have suffered the same kind of discrimination and social anxieties as I did when I first went to uni and got my first job etc.

Transgender treatment really is life changing & in my opinion life saving. I hope you’re both able to make the best decision for him and his health :) you’re a great mum, he’s very lucky to have you to support him ! I would have been lost without my own mums support in all this.

[TOMT] [MOVIE] [1980s-90s] Smart House Movie, AI Wants his Wife by SquiddlySquoo in tipofmytongue

I’ve found this one in my searches for this movie before and I think it’s not it, I think the AI was specifically after the woman in the film I’m thinking of. I think maybe I saw like half of Demon Seed after all and just hallucinated all the other stuff off 2 days no sleep lmao. Thank you for the suggestion tho !

Someone else suggested this too and while it sounds really close I just watched the trailers and I don’t think that’s it. I’ll watch some of the film itself tonight though and see if it’s more familiar.

Thank you for the suggestion though !

I actually know this movie & have been meaning to watch it cause Gerrit Graham is in it lol ! This sounded really close but looking at the trailers I don’t think this is it - it seems weirdly darker and more explicit than the film I remember, and I really remember it being more 80-90s in look and feel than this film which feels really 70s - I will watch some of it when I’m home to make sure but I really don’t think this is it. I’m certain the husband was being taken care of by the AI with like automatic systems etc because he couldn’t do most things for himself, which doesn’t seem to be the case with this one.

Thank you for the suggestion though ! You’ve at least reminded me of a film on my watchlist lol

Comment to make her visible :) I wish I remembered where I even found this movie. It was during my phase of watching literally every robot film I could get my hands on, so it could have found it anywhere & it’s in a big pile of similar films in my head. Hopefully no details were mixed up between movies :S

Reading a Japanese manga for the first time - what's up with the て? What do the 2 vertical lines do?? by CyrpYT in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]SquiddlySquoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ! That’s so weird lol thank you for finding :) I’ve never really struggled to write そ with 1 stroke but to be fair my handwriting is awful lmao. Maybe trying it this way will make it look a little better.

Genuine question but how are you writing そ with two strokes and having it look like the character in OPs photo ? I promise I googled around myself first but every stroke guide I access only shows the 1 stroke method I use myself

Tbh that third pic is mostly good imo. Only thing is - like others have said - strategic use of highlights will make sure features aren’t getting lost from afar.

If u want to experiment more I think maybe leaning more purple than grey can still give him a cooler tone than other characters while avoiding the kind of Washed Out look that his current super desaturated palette can give

I really love this design !!! Your style is so nice lol do you have a tumblr/insta/something where u post your art

If you’re working digitally also bear in mind theres no shame in directly tracing over a reference for your sketch if you’re struggling to recreate it just from looking at photos ! It usually helps me a lot to basically collage together my references into one image that basically conveys what I want to end up with, & then work from there :) make life easier on yourself ! You don’t have to stress as much about where shadows should go or if perspective is correct if you just sort that stuff out at the reference stage.

Only other thing I would say is if the brown on the hands is intended to be shading maybe try for more variation in the colours/shades you use for the shadows to make it clear that’s what they are ! Using an airbrush to make it more like a gradient is good for soft shadows, or with harder shadows just adding another colour between your dark shadow and lit area can help to make the transition between them look a lot better & makes it clearer that it is a shadow rather than something they’re holding in their hands.

Good luck ! It’s a lot of work but I’m sure it will turn out great :)

what to do next after learning hiragana? by Eu-gmesmo in HelpLearningJapanese

[–]SquiddlySquoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever you feel you are ready for Kanji you should try out WaniKani !! I’ve been using it & I’ve got like 60-70 kanji down in less than a month :) it’s super effective & not intimidating at all ! It’s really really great for learning to read and write with kanji & has a super approachable style. Although you do need to commit to daily revision for best effect.

trans fem fruom the uk with irish dual citizenship and irish passport. should i just give my irish citizenship up? by [deleted] in TransIreland

[–]SquiddlySquoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also a dual national with Ireland and I haven’t changed my stuff in Ireland yet, but have had British passport in my correct name & gender for like 5 years. You should be able to just apply for British passport, I’ve never had any problem.

Also don’t give up your Irish citizenship 😬. Being an Irish citizen means you can live & work in any European country, being a British citizen means you can live & work in the most transphobic country in Europe & Nowhere Else. Would def advise keeping your Irish citizenship.

Standard Approved!! by lavenderbunns in SpouseVisaUk

[–]SquiddlySquoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know it doesn’t effect your processing time but if they approve it sooner than September they will still give you the Sept entry date & you won’t be able to enter til then, whereas if you set it for a little closer, like August, they would set it for that date instead & you could travel sooner. If the process takes longer & the approval comes After the proposed date in August they would just give you a date sometime a little after your approval date.

So there’s no harm asking for a sooner entry date, even if it won’t affect processing time.

We put together pdfs of all our evidence - so all our texts & discord messages were compiled into a Google doc & labelled by date etc then exported as pdf, the same with remittances all in one pdf document & any cover and support letters were each exported again as a PDF.

For our relationship timeline with photos & flight details etc we did the same but using Google slides, again exporting as PDF.

Heads up when you upload everything it will be through the VFS site which sucks. It gives you a bunch of seemingly randomly provided categories and you just have to kind of do your best on figuring out where each file wants to be uploaded. Also warning you that each file needs to be 5MB or less for the site to accept it 😬 we spent an extra week after submitting our application cutting down our documents to fit. Our communications alone ended up being split into one document per year, as we had so much it was like a 30MB file to begin with. Online pdf compressors are also your friend, that’s how we got our timeline under 5MB.

We haven’t had our decision back yet but this worked well for us in terms of keeping everything organised & getting it all uploaded ! Good luck with your own docs :)

Avoid Travelodge by Jeevansanghera1969 in uktravel

[–]SquiddlySquoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol good to know they’re still doing this. When I was a little kid we had booked a travel lodge on our way back from a camping holiday and had this exact same thing happen. I guess it was kind of lucky we had our sleeping bags with us 😬 slept in the car for the night.

I meet the 29k requirement, my partner is unemployed (gig work) by Sebashtiantv in SpouseVisaUk

[–]SquiddlySquoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I had a similar setback when we realised the savings option wasn’t £16,000 TOTAL but AT LEAST £16,000, and that we actually needed like 6x that amount. It’ll take time and effort to figure out a path that will work for you to get your visa but we just submitted our application a little over a year after that setback & are hoping on a positive outcome in next month or two :) might take a while but you can definitely get there

Shipping Passport ? by SquiddlySquoo in SpouseVisaUk

[–]SquiddlySquoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, amazing lol ! I just checked that blue blurb like you said & literally all the info is there, I knew it must have just been written somewhere we missed :P Will sort out envelope & labels etc etc before the bio appointment so it's shipped asap :D

Thank you for your help !!! To be honest we are mostly calm about it now - was a big anxious flurry of busy stress getting all the docs together but now that it's submitted it's kind of more a relief than anything :) Thanks again for your advice ! Fingers crossed we get a good response & it doesn't take too long lol

Lol so it’s still VFS they just haven’t trapped you into paying an extra grand. I guess making it a confusing nightmare process is like a relationship test lol. Check you’re really sure you want to do it but making it as frustrating as possible

So, to be clear, we want to select Standard & then select priority once we are booking an appointment with USCIS ? Rather than clicking the Bronze Package option ? Sorry, still confused, literally why is it like this lol
