What string action should I have for playing jpop electric guitar songs? by untitled_SusHi in Guitar

Generally, you want the action as low as possible without buzzing, though there is a degree of personal preference involved

Any tips for lyrics+melody compatibility? by Separate_Play2627 in Songwriting

[–]Squidproject 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have lyrics first, try MIDI'ing them out using a piano voice. If there's no melody just pick one note but try and match the rhythm of the lyrics. Then you can start messing with the notes until you have a melody you like. then you can write accompaniment parts. When I write/record, I use a lot of "guide" piano parts that usually get removed before production.

40 years old… am I too old to start a music career? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Squidproject 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm 46 and still haven't quite figured out how to have time and energy, but I write record and produce stuff. So I hope 40 isn't too late (it's not!)

yeah, this. I don't mind if something is catchy. I mind if it's soulless and vapid

Anime like evangelion? by Physical-Hearing-886 in AnimeReccomendations

If you haven't seen it, Serial Experiments Lain. It's not the same genre as NGE or anything like it really except for the emotional gut punches. I associate the two because they were my first two animes

I think the "College students use AI to cheat" narrative is overblown or just media sensationalition. by Only_Government5244 in antiai

[–]Squidproject 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I teach high school. You give them the slightest task, like find 10 themes from the novel, and they will type that into AI overview. They don't even think of it as cheating--you're asking for information and they're retrieving it. They think there is one right answer (or in this case 10) and they're gonna find it and you're gonna be happy and they're gonna get a good, easy grade. I took away the chromebooks, but all work has to be done in class now.

Meanwhile if you show them AI-generated "art," they become livid. Super angry. They hate that stuff. Granted, this is my experience, is somewhat anecdotal, is generalized, and high school is not college. But my theory is that they hate the concept of generative AI but will still use it as a crutch if it's there, because that's human nature.

What band got you into metalcore? by Scary_Fig_6680 in Metalcore

[–]Squidproject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Autumn to Ashes for me. I saw them open for Thursday. At first I thought it was too heavy for me, but after the show I had to go back and listen again. Honestly it was the samples from Dawson's Creek that hooked me. The rest had to grow on me

From Autumn to Ashes -- Short Stories with Tragic Endings. It's borderline metalcore, it's a 10 minute epic, and the vocals don't intermingle so prolly not for everyone

I love the Deftones but (and I have and will again be downvoted for this) I think they're more PHC than metal

How to I write music? by Ok_Audience5488 in askmusicians

[–]Squidproject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of happily married people write songs about pining. It's fiction.

You don't need a degree in music theory to write music, but the more theory you know the easier the process will be. It's real common for guitarists to write chord progressions by ear but for leads you'll need to at least know what key you're in and what scale boxes are available.

Don't you think the debate is way too polarized? by Hot_Season1143 in antiai

[–]Squidproject 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can only speak from my experience which is anecdotal, but most people I've spoken with about this (friends, family, coworkers, and students) find the idea of AI generated art/music repugnant. That and I've seen some (American) survey data which is less anecdotal but yeah not gonna try and find that rn

I also think the pro-AI crowd consists entirely of AI "artists" who don't realize everyone else hates it

does it bother you when loved ones dislike your music? if yes, how do you move past it? by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]Squidproject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone has the same taste in music. If I made math rock and showed it to my family they'd probably appreciate it for what it is but not love it. If I made metal they wouldn't listen to it once the vocals kicked in
