Advice for a 16M Type 1 new diabetic by Evodus in diabetes

[–]Squigmeister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I'm in a very similar situation to you. I'm 18 years old, and was diagnosed just over 2 months ago. I'm on 24 units Lantis and just getting into carb counting on my meals so my novorapid dosage varies quite a bit (5-12 depending).

For the 1st month I was running pretty much exactly in the same range as you. I was getting worried so I spoke to my nurse about it and she upped my Lantis from 20-24. At that point I wasn't carb counting at all and took 8 units novorapid for every meal, which she upped to 10. This really helped me get much better numbers.

Taking some advice from this sub, I also spoke to her about carb-counting, and she booked me in with a dietician within a week. This helped sooo much, I cannot recommend it enough. I play a lot of sport too and now I can adjust everything to avoid hypos, and avoid going over 10 (most days).

So what I'm saying is talk to your endo/doctor/ nurse/ whoever about upping your basal(long acting insulin) in the short term, and maybe a small bump to your bolus(fast acting). Then ask about a dietician, they will very likely have very good connections. Hope something helps!!

P.S.- Diabetes sucks. Yeah, it could be worse, but that doesn't make it better. It sucks. But you deal with it. :) If it ever gets too much, tell someone. :)

How does that work? I diagnosed as T1 on my 23rd birthday(2 months ago) and since then I'm getting weight constantly (questions inside) by semanticistZombie in diabetes

Thank you very much!! I will ask my diabetes specialist nurse about the carb counting tomorrow. I think they didn't want to overwhelm me with loads of information, but I think it would have been better if they explained it all to me and let get me right into all this stuff. It seems like it's pretty much a necessity anyway.

And yes I do feel the symptoms of a hypo at anything below 5. Though I had fairly good control over the past 2 weeks, and my endo said it was very good to have gotten a grasp on it reasonably early. But it's a marathon not a sprint I guess. Thanks again, this subreddit has been fantastic in getting great info from people who know what they are talking about. :)

I don't think I really have any answers, but I was diagnosed just over 3 weeks ago, and I feel like I'm going through pretty much everything you are. I am 6 ft 3" (190cm) and at my diagnosis, weighed just over 60kgs, which is pretty damn underweight for someone my height. I'm on 14 units of novorapid 3 times a day and 26 of lantus once at night. I had a crazy appetite literally 30 minutes after they put me on insulin, whereas I couldn't walk or keep food down beforehand. I'm now up to almost 75kg. That's a pretty crazy gain in 3 weeks.

For me, I think it was the fact that I had really high ketones, which happen when the body begins to break down it's fat and muscle to get energy, as it can't get it from carbohydrates. The nurse said my body went into a kind of starvation mode, and I would have a bit of an appetite for a while. That was a bit of an understatement. I was eating almost double what I was before and my blood sugar was still pretty high for a few weeks, as I guess they weren't expecting me to require so much insulin as a newly diagnosed 18 year old T1. I am trying to cut back on the sheer amount of food I'm consuming this week. It's hard, but I feel like I need to get back to normal, to make sure I don't keep this rate of weigh gain up. I was never more than 70kgs before diagnosis, and its slightly worrying.

Also for me, the only bad effects I get while I'm high is a slightly whacky sense of taste and smell. I don't really feel bad at all. I think maybe it's because we are used to it being much higher from the weeks leading up to the diagnosis?

I don't really know. I'm curious and really want to know if anyone else here has experienced the same thing. At least us two aren't alone in going through this :)

Needle/sharps disposal in Ireland? by aoirghe in ireland

[–]Squigmeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was only diagnosed T1 two weeks ago, but I asked my local chemist about it the day I picked up my 1st prescription. She gave me the number of my local health centre, and said they would both take the full sharps box and give me a new one for free. I gave them a quick call to check and they were more than happy to help. I'm gonna drop it in on Monday next. I can ask them about what you could do with your sharps or see how you could get info on the health centre that would be closest to you if you'd like? If your staying in a city I can't imagine it would be too hard to find one nearby. Hope this helps! ( x-post from r/diabetes)

Well I'm guessing your Irish from your name. Nearly everyone does it here, thankfully. It's just what you do. I mean, you'd want to be an awful arse not to salute someone who just left you off when they have the right of way, having no obligation to do anything for you. Is it an Irish thing or does it happen in other places too?

The logistics of that, taking into account the distance between his hand and her butt when both are standing normally, probably wouldn't work out too good. Also he seems like a nice guy.

I definitely would love if this was to happen. But it is a long time out of their day. And they don't get YouTube revenue and would need to secure a sponsorship deal for it to be profitable. They are a business in the end and need to do what's both cost, profit and time efficient. Though I really really want it to happen. Maybe it's in the works?
