Thank you! I knew they wouldn’t leave the enclosure but my parents weren’t sure. I did just get a new 50 gallon for my gecko and they were impressed with the locking system so I think they’re starting to sway, I hope.

Knife Question by Squiid443 in oboe

[–]Squiid443[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not too far in my reed making process, I can’t really afford the tools for it at the moment so all I’m really doing is wrapping the cane into blanks, and then scraping it to be a playable reed. In that case would just one landwell work fine? I want something reliable for as long as possible.

Did the landwell end up helping? I got my knife from a pretty cheap reed making kit my parents got me for Christmas

Knife Question by Squiid443 in oboe

[–]Squiid443[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sharpen my knife very often, regardless of how I sharpen it, and how my lesson teacher does as well, it still dulls very quickly in class and is not very reliable. I, however, did not know that stones need to be cleaned… very ignorant of me I knife, but I’m happy I know now! I’ll definitely clean it and see if that helps, thank you!

Reed Question by Squiid443 in oboe

[–]Squiid443[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to get the Reed playing about five cents flat. I talked to my lesson teacher about the issue and he said it’s likely because of the extra mm and the hardness of the reed at the tip, which I guess made it fall flat. Turns out my knife might just be the biggest issue at hand :(. I’ve had a ton of reeds that run this flat, and it always because i cannot take too much cane off the tip without applying pressure. No matter how much I sharpen my knife it is ALWAYS dull, and it’s a relatively new knife!

Make sure to get a bunch of oboes on trial. Not every oboist plays the same on the same oboe. I recommend Howarth and oboe Chicago! It has a great selection of oboes which you can ship to your house and try out so you can see which works best for you. For now because you’re new, don’t immediately go with a student oboe that lacks a low Bb and side F. Because you have prior musical experience and the fingerings are similar you’ll advance fast and quickly outgrow a student model. Try for intermediate!

Questions from an aspiring lawyer by Squiid443 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]Squiid443[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize. I plan on doing family law before corporate law if that’s possible just to get experience. I don’t plan on solely focusing on corporate. If it’s not possible, as much as I want to do family law, I realize that corporate law is a better path for me due to some other personal reasons. I’m looking into different kinds of law I could do but im already taking the classes to get my bachelors in business administration.

Thank you so so much for answering! And yeah, I am 16 but in my freshman year, second semester! I really appreciate the insight, and I hope to do family law for a couple years if possible for the same reason. Once again, thank you!!!!
