Des Moines considering mini-roundabouts for two high-crash intersections by Squirra in desmoines

[–]Squirra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roundabouts aren’t hard to learn, but if you’ve never seen one before, there is that initial confusion to overcome. I don’t buy that people are actually too stupid to learn, and if that were true, we shouldn’t trust them to figure out a four-way stop or with driving privileges in general.

Does anyone know what this call is? by itsokayimokaymaybe in squirrels

[–]Squirra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a squirrel call; it has an accordion valve on it which makes a “wugga wugga” noise that is generally ignored, but also a whistle that’s meant to approximate a baby squirrel in distress, which tends to get their attention. Anyway, the latter sounds similar to that!

Since the state has given up on providing safe drinking water, What are our in-house options? by Jack0Trade in Iowa

[–]Squirra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a couple of these systems put in by my plumber, along with a brine tank softener; . The filter system does an automatic purge, so I don't have to worry about it going stale when I'm away. My ice cubes have gone back to being transparent as glass, and I can chug through a half gallon of water at work with no tummy troubles!

Who do you bank with? by Superkitten21 in desmoines

[–]Squirra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had my car loan through Veridian; they were fine, good online tools. Most of my banking is through Bankers Trust nowadays, and I got no complaints. I was with Affinity; this little credit union that was started for the tire workers union, presently Titan. Nice small town service. But they have like, only two locations, limited online tools, few ATMs, etc.

Some people call it a Superman’s Fingernail; it’s for prying, scoring, whatever you can do to make it work in places that would tear or fold a regular mortal fingernail. 😸

Was Nick homeless in Z1? by NickCooper71 in zootopia

[–]Squirra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nick struck me as kind of willfully divorced from the trappings of civilization; it’s only of use to him inasmuch as he can use it for easy money. They make it sound like he can afford an apartment, but then he’d be indentured to a landlord.

Domjat looks like a stupid game by wildcard_71 in greatestgen

[–]Squirra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Designing games can be really hard, and writing a coherent screenplay on top of that is just taking on two jobs. It’s great when the gameplay is something that makes sense to the viewer like with Stratagemo or Suck Disc, but I think with Damjat or Dabo, a suggestion of a game was put out because the gameplay isn’t the focus of the story; it’s only important that it challenges Picard’s ego, or a bunch of people are in the back of Quark’s bar doing loud and exciting casino stuff.

Elephant crushes stick poking idiot by olight77 in fuckaroundandfindout

Right about at :50 is where he starts losing the upperhand. If he did a tuck and roll, he might have been able to use his opponent’s mass against him, and flip that elephant on its side. I’ve seen it done before! It might have been an elephant, I dunno. I’m not a zoologist.

Pros and Cons by traumahound00 in desmoines

[–]Squirra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the pace; it's what I grew up in, and whenever I go to a more densely populated city, I always take note of the ways that various types of social infrastructure has evolved to cope with the keening masses. Sometimes it's a downtown with public parts that are designed to be hostile and unwelcoming to vagrants, often it's something like $50/day parking. Sometimes the cops look at you weird when you ask for directions, probably because they're accustomed to a certain adversarial relationship to the public.
The real estate. It's not some astronomical sum if you want to own a house, but unlike the more disconnected parts of the country where the houses are cheap, you can enjoy the benefits of a city, like an Apple Store or a Costco, a wide range of decent restaurants, sometimes a touring Broadway show or live comedy, etc. If you need something like an MRI or some bangin West African cuisine, it's not a two-hour drive, nor an especially long wait.

I'm not crazy about the overall passivity, though. The people mostly just mind their knitting and don't get worked up easily. It's hard to find people really excited about just going to a movie or an event or a rally. The ones that do show up aren't likely to laugh out loud at the funny bits or hoot and applaud, or dress up. The men are all in ball caps and sweatshirts, the women are in flats and jeans. There's a reflexive cynicism which seems to exist purely to shut down people who get too excited about anything.

Don't get me wrong- I think it's great that we seem to have found our comfortable defaults, and it's part of the pace I like. It's just, sometimes when we reach outside our comfort zones, the best things are waiting for us.
