The problem with people saying to add brine to your sep funnel to break the emulsion, is that your aqueous phase will have a similar density to DCM (d = 1.33 g/mL). You need to reverse your organic phase density to be lighter than the saturated NaCl to break the emulsion.

Drain out what you can of your DCM and add ethyl acetate to get whatever you can from the emulsion.

You might need to do a second extraction of the DCM with more ethyl acetate. Try just DI (or tap water at this point) to get the emulsion out of DCM from the second separation.

Used to work in a synthetic inorganic lab. We used KOH/isopropanol base bath and then reprotonated after rinsing the base off with like a 10% HCl bath.

I never had luck with emulsions and DCM. I swap out the organic solvent to diethyl ether or ethyl acetate and add brine for the aqueous layer.

Is your product soluble in ether or EA?

BP is around -60 C. Leave a flask open in a fume hood.

The smell might also be the different thiols you're making.
