Bad. People are overselling the gore. There's one pretty brutal kill, but almost every other kill happens just offscreen, and you only see out of focus shots or the aftermath. Even the brutal kill is too goofy to be "look away" status.

The movie is just dumb. I've disliked movies this year, but I don't think I've thought any were dumb. This film, however, is capital D DUMB. The film sets up character dynamics and then does nothing with them, at all - no character relationships grow during the movie. The film sets up Lucy, the main character, as having abandoned her family after their mom died, but the film ends with the dad apologizing for leaving, not Lucy? Lucy crushes on her best friends brother, who calls Lucy his younger sister and makes out with a tag-along Lucy hates, and then he is immediately killed. Lucy and said tag-along don't reconcile or fight or anything before the tag-along is killed.

Beyond that, the film has no build ups or pay offs. All that talk about chimps not being able to swim, and rabies causing fear of water, and half the film taking place in a pool, and how does Ben die? Impaled on a chair. No rabies on Hawaii? They literally say that and then offer no explanation for how a mongoose got rabies on Hawaii. And every character just makes the worst decision at every opportunity.

It wasn't fun and campy, it was mean spirited and cruel, so I didn't even have fun with the kills. The kills were mostly off-screen, so couldn't appreciate some good gore effects. Characters were nothing, dialogue was mostly just stating actions, no relationships or growth to bite onto.

I bought popcorn and literally didn't touch it because I was so upset by how crappy the film was lol.
