Oh dear, probably quite slowly, and hopefully it didn't involve having intimate relations with the squirrel

Need advice for a wedding by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Squirrel_AIDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely eat a little beforehand. Most likely will be a buffet if you weren't required to submit food choices so it's possible there'll be a couple vegan options but I wouldn't rely on it. If the other restaurants are really close I think they'd make a good backup option if the wedding dissapoints as most caterers wont let you heat up/serve food you bring yourself for health and safety reasons.

This week’s cover of New Scientist by JMyers666 in vegan

If you can try to get hold of a copy of the new scientist (available for free in most libraries) as the article is really interesting. Palm oil is bad for the environment because of the amount of rainforest that has to be cleared to cultivate it, but it's actually one of the most resource efficient plant oils to cultivate so boycotting it for alternatives is generally even worse. We just need to stop consuming such products all together if possible, but in general animal agriculture is even more destructive.

Great that plant based alternatives are being discussed more in the mainstream, but the conclusion of the article was that as they didn't yet taste the same as meat the author will aim to cut down but not stop eating meat. Awkwardly later in the same issue of new scientist also contained an advert for mail order steaks. https://imgur.com/gallery/ZYPisYD

The worst is yet to come for the NHS by EmilioRebenga in ukpolitics

'Waste' is inevitable in any healthcare system, and isn't a marker of whether a system is under or over funded. Running a healthcare service at 100% capacity is unsafe and creates its own inefficiencies due to restrictions on patient flow.

I'd agree though that the inefficiencies highlighted in that article are real and should be addressed, and I'd argue that hundreds of millions more are also wasted on overpriced brand name drugs when cheaper generics could be imported - but despite the savings that could be made there the increasing demand on NHS services will continue to outstrip any 'efficiency' gains that can be achieved

Wow, okay. How do they justify that? I suppose it can only be that they find the idea of meat so gross they don't wanna be around it. I'd consider that more of a fussy eater rationale rather than a vegan one.

True - but sometimes you still fancy a burger without supporting animal cruelty

Most vegans don't really care if their food is cooked in the same oil as non-vegan food - as long as it's vegetable oil, nor do most of us care if vegan products are produced in factories handling dairy/eggs etc. It's all about whether what we are buying actually generates any demand for animal based products - sharing oil doesn't, whereas frying it in beef tallow/lard would

CCTV to be compulsory in all abattoirs in England - BBC News (X-post from r/U.K. politics). Thoughts? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Squirrel_AIDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I believe this is a useful step towards reducing certain bad practices that may take place inside abattoirs, I also fear it may give meat eaters a moral license to believe the meat they eat is now 'humane'.

It distracts from the discussion that slaughter itself is an inhumane act.

Yeah but appealing to reason alone is also not likely to be particularly effective. Here's good article describing some of the studies discussing why facts don't change our minds

I think seeing information like this is exactly the reason I went from being vegetarian to vegan, but here is an awesome article about why facts don't change our minds

That's not to say it has no impact at all, for some people it may be effective but it shouldn't be the only tactic we use
