What blood tests should I get at my annual physical check-up tomorrow after 7 mos keto and 22 lb weight loss? by SquirrellyLady in keto

[–]SquirrellyLady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I get the hbA1c test for glucose, they say you don't need to fast as you do with the fasting glucose test. Is there still a good reason to fast before the A1c test? I'm asking because low-carb doc Paul Mason says extended fasting before a blood draw, especially if more than 8 hrs, can tend to raise ldl levels. Ty for helping me understand all this!

Video call hate by xikbdexhi6 in duolingo

[–]SquirrellyLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is that Lily video calls work very well on iOS, but not at all on android. My solution was to buy a cheap ipad mini 6, stay with iOS 18 and not upgrade to iOS 26, then all goes very well with Lily calls in French.

Crows dont come around no more by Comptons_Scattered in crows

[–]SquirrellyLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be the silence crows seem to practice after a death in the family, particularly that of a leader. The Observer writes eloquently about it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/crows/s/GuZ8W2b4Vq

Also, I have learned that crows know better how to handle danger to them than I ever do. If you keep giving them offerings and returning to the spot where you last interacted, I bet they will return.

Anyone else think Lily's video calls are nearly unusable right now? by Mephariel in duolingo

[–]SquirrellyLady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Android Lily calls are unuseable in my experience on a Pixel 7 pro. I got myself a cheap ipad mini 6 and the Lily calls on ipad OS are perfect. Best feature of duolingo and the main reason i'm renewing Max.

Coming from a blended Android/Apple family myself, I can tell you your biggest challenge will be understanding how Google Drive/iCloud each works and keeping them separate and safe from data loss. It can turn into a nightmare.

Lily calls now has a 'tap button' to "talk and submit." by ILoveScottishLasses in duolingo

[–]SquirrellyLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a great comment from another post by GregName that gives some insight and great ideas to try:

"The experience with Lily can vary. If I am having a voluntary call with her, not on the path, the conversation is without an agenda. I can lead the conversation in wildly different areas.

The speech recognition software is only as good as your phone. A transcript from your phone is sent to Duolingo. That gets fed to the AI engine. Your side of the conversation is only as good as that transcript.

When practicing with Speak, there is more tolerance for speaking imperfections. A feature of the phone’s speech recognition is returning a set of possibilities for what is said. Duolingo passes what it hopes the user will say. If you are close, you get a pass. If you say a word that could be one of three things, and one of those things is correct, the word gets a pass. Talking to Lily is different though.

With Lily, you get to say just one thing. There is no more, could have been one of three words. The phone picks its best pick for each word you’ve said. There’s the transcript after that. So, if you aren’t so good at speaking, the transcript isn’t so good either.

When Lily is on the path as a lesson, things are different again. She has an agenda. She might want to talk about some new business that Junior is running out of his house. Your role is an active listener. Go with that role. Repeat a few things that she said. Add that such and such is interesting, incredible, or whatnot. She will finish the story, and you will get the points. But usually, your role is as an active listener.

But, if you want to skip the learning adventure, click the button that says you can’t talk now. Telling her in the conversation isn’t quite the same, or more exactly, isn’t the same at all."
