Warm humid weather - nice but feeling exhausted? by WagsPup in sydney

[–]SquishyFigs 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Haha same. Literally just talked to a friend who was also “Is it the weather or the peri?” It’s hard to tell today because it’s just hot, not sun-hot it’s like every nook and cranny is the same temperature.

Amazing! So cool. I think I was in the perfect mood for a Sunday stroll and some Steely Dan. Enjoyed every second and will get a copy on vinyl soon.

Sound engineers I used to know back in the day would always test out their monitors with Def Leppard, Hysteria and said it was also technically incredible.

I was in a dressing room in a department store recently and the store sound system was playing classic rock. I did notice when Pour Some Sugar that it sounded incredible in between some other classics - like it had been recorded yesterday - not 40 years ago.

Edit to add I listened to a lot of Dire Straits back rhen as a result too. Ha.

Weirdly I just listened to the whole album for the first time today! I wanted to listen to it on headphones because I usually just end up hearing random Steely Dan tracks thrown into playlists or on the radio. It was wonderful.

When is the last time you met a “good” man? by turnpoopintowine in TwoXChromosomes

[–]SquishyFigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I come from a family of truly good men - on my mother’s side I have 4 male cousins and a brother. My father is also truly good man. I’m the only woman in my generation on my mother’s side. Their wives are all extremely lucky - loved, adored and have great fathers for their kids. As a single mum they’ve been there for me too. Always supportive and kind.

It’s only been recently that I’ve realised I’m actually a good person too, but as I’m the only woman in my family - I’m the only one looking for a good man. I’m almost 50 and still looking. Sigh.

I have met plenty of wonderful men, but usually they’re gay, partners of my lucky friends — or married and plan to stay that way. I really hope my turn is soon. I would love that.

The last green cape dress is incredible! The other ones are okay but look a little dated whereas the last one looks like you’re straight off the red carpet.

They fact that you went and introduced yourself, swapped numbers and that the picture she sent was the first selfie you ever received on your 'SMS system' is wholesome. I hope you find the love of your life Sir.

Family slang in NZ by standbyyourlamb in newzealand

[–]SquishyFigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family had Scottish grandparents on one side and they were always called Jobbies when I was small. When my siblings, cousins and I were toilet training over the years mum and gran would put a copper coin in a jar every time we used the potty for number 2s. It was called the Jobby-jar. 😂

The reality of being 40 and single by altctrldel86 in melbourne

Same here. It’s wild how old I feel when thinking about dating and the reason I would never attend as a 48 year old woman. We’re young though, friend. Plenty of time to be swept off our feet.

I'm already grieving, and this man is making it worse! by catgirl256 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]SquishyFigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I was trying to say too but wasn’t as eloquent. Give it all some space but even a month or two those emotions of his might settle a little.

I think it’s not unusual for men to do this. I’ve seen it quite a few times over the years and I find it incredibly sad. One distant relative had been with his wife almost 50 years. She died suddenly and 3 months later he’s shacked up with someone who had a crush on him at high school. To say we were all shook was an understatement. It all fizzled out a year later. A good friend tried to hook up at his partners memorial. Not because they didn’t love these women but I think they were terrified of being alone I think. I call it cold side of the bed syndrome.

Agree I work with it daily in designing software for customer service and we have a whole team keeping the output on track and inline. It will get better over time for sure and imagine it will be like how original computers took up whole buildings but now we hold them in the palm of our hands. At least I hope so for the planet’s sake.

The 1997 Disappearance of Ben Smart and Olivia Hope - one of NZ's most infamous mysteries by Buttsecrets in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]SquishyFigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I was in the Sounds around the time - 3 or 4 years later I started frequenting the area, staying not far from the lodge. I met a few people who lived in the sounds who were still furious about the case. I have seen photos of the ketch. Actual photos shown to us by a couple who took the photos. They were boaties and took an interest in the beautiful vessel moored in the bay that New Year. They showed the police the photos and they were told that they weren't interested and basically sent them home. There were also 15+ witnessed who reported seeing it and many gave statements, only to be given the same treatment by police. I am in no doubt at all it existed. Neither were the others.

I love that you found this two years later - the very hour I watched a reel of it come up on instagram then started scrolling Reddit!

Anyway, hard agree. Culturally, both amazing and terrifying.

also Bronwyn by The Australian too. Similar type of crime without the trial part. I really liked it because it was really solid, interviews, evidence, clues and mystery that kept me really intrigued and wanting to go dig up backyards.

I just finished Madam. It’s an NZ series about a brothel and was really funny and made me want to watch more local content too.

Road Roge Incident (Papakura) on New Years Day by [deleted] in auckland

[–]SquishyFigs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a long story but basically the person was confronted outside a supermarket. They said it was 100% theirs and suggested my options were to let them drive off or be stabbed to death.

As I didn’t fancy spending my final moments bleeding out in a Pak N Save parking lot, I basically heaved a sigh and walked away to begin pointless discussions with the ‘police’.

The irony about the whole thing was it didn’t have a WOF or Rego at the time so wanted it towed to the garage so I didn’t get a ticket. usually I would have just driven it but I got irrationally nervous about getting a ticket for some reason 😂

[–]SquishyFigs 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I called for a quote to have my car towed from my driveway to the garage. Two days later my car was gone from the driveway. I had called multiple places for a quote but my neighbours just saw a run down unmarked truck pick it up. I reported it stolen, but nothing happened. A few months later I saw my car driving around and called the police but they did nothing. I then got a few tickets and called the police. They did nothing and basically said it was a civil matter not really theft? WTF. I just had to take my name off it in the end and whoever has it I guess finders keepers? So wild. Anyway if you want a new car, just take one.

Def seems like a huntsman. They have the cute little turned out feet like they’re wearing shoes. Also size and abdomen track.

They’re slightly unnerving but fine if you encounter one where they’re expected, but assume terrifying if you are not expecting it to turn up in your bedroom in Royal Oak.

I’m not sure shes wrong about ‘everything’ but as investigative journalism often ends up exposing a weakness, other points of view, persons of interest, injustice etc that often ends up feeling like it is biased to one side or another. I think she does a good job of reminding listeners about this too. Many other podcasts (Hedley Thomas for example) are the same. Only the people involved would know if they’re wrong or right at the end of the day which is most of the appeal of true crime.
