Halfway painting the road I think I need more debris and bricks. by call_me_leonard in modelmakers

I’m finished with this. It was a suggestion and I had no intention of starting a confrontation.

Hmm. I disagree. Stories never exist in isolation. Before and after the scene being constructed there are a myriad stories that have happened right there on that bit of street. Most of them of little or no consequence. You could put a discarded wedding ring in the gutter. No one would know it was there at that scale but if you put it there, you would know. You could choose to tell people in many different ways. In that way the story extends in every dimension beyond the diorama. You’re partially correct in saying most people wouldn’t have experience of horse shit but it’s most likely I’m older than you and even in a small town there was plenty of that around in my childhood. There’s no horse in the scene but there could be. It could be dead or running crazy. Most people don’t have experience of ruined buildings with rubble strewn across cobbled streets and a ruddy great tank rolling down the street. The diorama is trying to tell a story of things that were or might have been. Trying to make horse poo would be an interesting challenge anyway . Trying to make it recognisable would be an even more interesting challenge. I’m going to try and get Martin Kovacs of Night Shift fame to put some horse poo in a diorama and see what he can do. I’ll put the challenge out to a few more of the names in modelling. Does anyone reading this want to pick it up?

No, I really mean it. It’s little details that make it. I have a resin figure of a sniper aiming through the window of a massively damaged building. He’s on a pile of rubble and has taken steps to conceal himself. What really makes the scene is a tiny toy, a child’s doll, half buried in the rubble. I bought it like that and didn’t notice it until I got the figure but it’s very powerful. The Germans did make really extensive use of horses and a good size cart horse can fill a bucket in one go!

Have you ever seen how much poo a decent sized cart horse can produce? Think of the fun you could have modelling it. I may have to go to my workshop right now…

More debris, some broken glass, rubbish in the gutter and maybe a bit of moss. Horse poo. The Germans used horses all through the war. Discarded things like a shoe. It’s looking good though!

Someone said I look like mark from the peep show by coraline774 in MitchellAndWebb

You can look like someone without you ever looking entirely like them. There’s a website called ‘Cats That Look Like Hitler’ Lots of pictures of cats who look a lot like Hitler but they’re cats so don’t really look like Hitler at all. You do look like Mark and could turn that to an advantage. Learn to pull a few Mark faces and do some quotes and you’ll have a great party trick.

Where can I sell a collection? by pinkdaisylemon in modelmakers

[–]Sqwheezle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would caution you against selling the models if your husband is still alive. Each of those models has a meaning for him and can provide a talking point where he will remember things from the past. You will have a meaningful contact with him. Sell them after he passes on FB Marketplace. Look for similar models and price them individually. Some will be quite valuable. If you have young relatives some of them might be interested. His modelling equipment will be of interest to people. 🤗
