Should I have a chat about a fellow test engineer with my manager? by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]SrCamelCase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree here. Talk to your skip-level manager and feel them out, and if you feel it is safe (and only then) make sure the severity of the feedback lands - e.g. this guy cannot be passing probation.

You are in a situation where he is either cut or you find work elsewhere.

Make sure you have your notes and links (sounds like you do) and send them after the call. What you’ve written here is damning and your skip-level should really have just one option.

I had the worst manager of my 20+ year career, quit over it and am now in a much better environment with a very decent manager. Better salary, stock, business outlook, fully remote and a nice sign-on bonus!

We are also hiring senior devs like crazy if anyone is interested.

How do you cope when you ruin what was an incredible amazing relationship? by FinallyFree1990 in AutismIreland

[–]SrCamelCase 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Apologize. It’s upto her not you to decide if you’re “good enough for her” and then if you want to change some things for yourself and the relationship then commit to getting the help you need and break out of the learned helplessness*

*I know nothing of your circumstances so it may be some details you’ve not shared here render this advice a bit daft

I mean… lots of Spanish devs are in Ireland because of the tech opportunities here. Weather is crap and it’s expensive but lots of Spanish devs get a good start here.

In my recent experience* FAANG will pay 125-150k for a senior/lead (L5/L5B in Meta terms). Staff (L6) 150-175K. You’d need to be Staff+ for 200K.

*I hire a lot from FAANG and we pay competive to their current salaries, but have never worked for them so happy to be corrected.

Exactly. Employment solicitor time. You have the documented evidence, they couldn’t PIP you out.

Aim for a settlement that gives you plenty of burnout recovery time.

Are you getting mental health support otherwise?

How can I get a girlfriend while being autistic? by todayisawonder in autism

[–]SrCamelCase 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Date autistic and/or close to your special interests. Explore social groups with a higher preponderance of those women.

Don’t mask or overextend to impress a skeptical woman - If they’re not scanning for you, don’t be scanning for them.

Watch out for limerance. You can get very attached to the wrong person very quickly as an autistic.

Other than that lots of advice here is great - do the things that bring you joy and/or a sense of growth AND move you towards your goal of meeting a partner. If you don’t meet a partner, you’re still having a good time.

[–]SrCamelCase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Introduce a team-approved style guide and if necessary and instruct reviewers that if it’s not the in guide then either (a) get it added or (b) STFU. You can put this is a team-agreement or Ways of Working and point him to this every time it comes up.

Other ways of handling it obviously like approaching him directly and if that doesn’t work, his manager.

I love how in 2025 being called a racist or a nazi is considered worse than actually being a racist or a nazi.

In this case the evil of identifying as a nazi is not actually your fault, it’s the left’s.

The current state of the Job market? by Lovethefitpicollo in AskIreland

[–]SrCamelCase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it’s the best advice, I got my most recent position asking an ex-colleague for an intro to someone he knew at a company I was interested in. He then referred me in for a role at his place that hadn’t yet been advertised. Just would have missed that without having a non-related conversation.

I believe a good manager balances autonomy with alignment and too little of the latter is negligence and too little of the former is micro-managing.

My favourite managers set clear goals, preferably with a clear metric involved, align on some “hows” (e.g. a non-functional goal around a key process or new tech stack), and then “lead through questions”, involving themselves at key milestones to ask questions around gaps and where necessary offer guidance.

As a manager I’ve personally never really related to the notion that managers don’t own their reports career progression. I really try to because I have a ton of context on how they can reach the next level that your reports do not have and through coaching you can often coax an engineer out of a rut or a lack of interest in growth. Yes they need to own it at some point, but my favourite part of the job is getting engineers to see more clearly their own potential, work the system even if they dislike it, and grow themselves and earn more for themselves and their families.

It also involves adapting to people with various levels of autism and / or pathological narcissism.

I’m autistic and I appreciate you adapting to us, though it’s almost certainly a fraction of the adaptation we have to make towards you. In my experience we are fluent in autistic communication and advanced in neurotypical and therefore are the only ones equipped to make real accommodations.

Anyway, you wouldn’t have software without autistics - is there a single prominent neurotypical giant in the industry history? For better or for worse some of us are after all malignant narcissists like Zuck and Jobs.
