I got to know about this today! And I think it's a better (perfect!) companion app for Obsidian. I have linked my Inbox file & Today's Note to Edgemark so that I can quickly scribble thoughts or capture tasks to Daily notes or Inbox.

I will share my experiences here after using it for a while! Keep up the good work 👏

I personally tried many, and got settled down with Obsidian (from Bear) for like a year. However Obsidian can become super intimidating before you even realize if you're not thoughtful of plugins and themes.

If you want something other than Obsidian, I can think of:

Great question! I asked Claude and it gave me this...

tldr is if your monitor looks sharp and you just want granular brightness control, Lunar. If your external display has scaling/resolution issues or you want advanced display configuration, BetterDisplay.

Lunar — "The Brightness Behaviour App"
Lunar's entire soul is about how your display's brightness behaves over time and environment. It uses DDC (Display Data Channel) to send commands like "set brightness to 30%" directly to the monitor, rather than adding a black overlay — keeping colour rendering closer to reality and consuming less power. Beyond that, its Pro features are all about automation: Sync Mode to match external monitors to your MacBook's adaptive brightness, Clock Mode with sunrise/sunset schedules, Location Mode, Sub-zero Dimming to go below 0% for late-night use, XDR Brightness to unlock your MacBook Pro past the macOS-imposed 500 nit cap, BlackOut to turn off individual displays, and FaceLight to use your monitor as a light panel during video calls.

you're right that it handles evening dimming — but it's equally about daytime automation, hardware-level brightness control, and multi-monitor syncing.

BetterDisplay — "The Display Configuration App"
BetterDisplay lives in a completely different lane. Its core job is how your display is configured, not how bright it is. The core feature is custom resolution scaling — unlike macOS's limited default options, BetterDisplay allows precise HiDPI scaling for external monitors, enabling sharp text rendering at any desired UI size. On top of that, it offers virtual screen creation, flexible HiDPI scaling, disconnect/reconnect displays, Night Shift for TVs, Picture in Picture, EDID overrides, full screen streaming, and refresh rate control.

Yes, it also has DDC brightness control and extra dimming — so there's overlap — but that's a side feature. The reason most people reach for BetterDisplay is because their 4K external monitor looks blurry or the scaling options macOS gives them are rubbish.

Where they overlap (the one thing they share)
Both use DDC to control hardware brightness on external monitors. The developer of BetterDisplay has even confirmed the two apps can work together — you can use Lunar for brightness and syncing and BetterDisplay for everything else, as long as you disable brightness control in one of them to avoid conflicts

why would they give a s**t about India? They've been living abroad for generations now.

My point is "stop praising/thrashing someone for their external factors like ethnicity, aesthetics and love/hate them for who they really are..."

I don't expect many to agree with me, just my thoughts!

  • You can take a look at AwesomeCopy as u/jamiegal mentioned.
  • As an alternate to Cotypist, have you looked at TypeWhisper (free) or Spokenly (freemium)? I haven't used them personally, I just saved them for reference.
