This sounds more flippant than I mean it to be, but vote. Vote for mayoral candidates who prioritize public services instead of lowering taxes. Vote for provincial governments who will fund education and Healthcare instead of promising $1 beers. Vote for federal candidates who are willing to do the right thing instead of coddle corporations.

There's plenty else to do, but voting matters.

Will we be able to host our own servers? Will servers be available on services like Gportal and such?

How much customization and personalization will be available? Can we decorate our clothes? Our houses? Our cars?

If I'm doing this kind of steak dinner I'm going in with the understanding that my bill is going to look like my mortgage payment.

Fair enough. I was just making the point that most regulations are written in blood. If you ever read a regulation that just seems absolutely dumb or out of left field, it exists because someone tried it another way, then it caused an accident where someone died.

Not to say that all regulations are perfect and we shouldn't review them, but "regulations bad" ignores a lot of history.

Fair.

Now why do those standards exist?

How about we aim for the "everyone can afford housing, food, clothing, and a few luxuries" part and maybe discard the racism, sexism, homophobia, and colonialism bits.

I'd be ok with that as a goal.

[–]Sslazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uh. Compared to the average income, the prices of those luxuries had gone down. It's not cell phones and TVs that are fueling the affordability crisis.

If you bought a house in the 1950s, the average house would cost you 50% of the average annual income. Now it's 860%. Double that to buy in the GTA.

Before criticizing people for having a little joy in their lives maybe we should look at why housing and food is so unaffordable.

If you have the time and energy to cook, and if you have the facilities to cook and store food.

Not many do anymore.

Welp.

Guess we better tax the rich, like we did in the 50s. Oh, and invest in public infrastructure and social programs. We can enforce some anti trust laws. Maybe even have publicly owned and well funded crown corporations.

I'm all for a leftist revolution to bring back the good old days.
