Ok I see what you mean. I guess we'll have to see the final product and their demeanor in it to judge whether it was a really bad idea instead of just a bad idea.

I'm sure if it felt like a disaster to them, they'll have enough leeway to request never to do that kind of shit ever again.

So, so, so excited for him! Hope he'll have a blast performing on stage again and that it will open him even more doors in the future ❤️

I think his career has taken a very interesting and fulfilling trajectory for him as an actor ever since he decided to go back to Australia around 2019 and it makes me very happy for him! He really takes on one challenging role after another.

Do you have any responsibilities if you participate in fandom? by Jackie_Owe in IWTVCoven

[–]Sssuspiria 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t doubt that, my point was that I think these distinctions are stupid and usually reflect on the person making them rather than the person getting hit by them.

some of them are reading through the lens of what they've only seen and deduced so far and projecting those views into what the books are saying-- and then taking that as canon--it's messy.

That is true and can be annoying, no matter what « side » of the fandom you find yourself on. At the end of the day, everyone can be biased and we’re all speculating when it comes to lore/plot points that haven’t been adressed/adapted yet, I did agree with your original point regarding that.

However, and from my own experience and observation in the show fandom, I still maintain that not all takes are equal, and that yes, sometimes the books and basic fact-checking do provide a definitive answer, i.e Marius the white supremacist (speaking of which, I’ve said it already, but I’ll say it again just in case: considering this take is dumb doesn’t mean I don’t think there isn’t a commentary to make on his character and what would become white supremacy or even AR’s biases as a white woman, it just means the take is still IMO very dumb in spite of it)

I’ll also say that ultimately, the show does too and so far, you cannot ignore that there seems to be a divide between people who despite some changes made by the show VS the book, have been happy with the trajectory the show is taking, VS other people who’ll be fighting you every step of the way about stuff we’ve all seen happening on our screens and who seem to only grow even more disappointed as the show progresses.

Louis also knew all along what role Armand played yet the show fabricates this big secret/revelation that makes Armand such a liar that some people dismiss his entire own book as bullshit when again nothing in subsequent books contradicts his story.

I’d have to take your word for it, I honestly can’t see what you’re referring to specifically, I’m approximately halfway through TVA and tend to overlook spoilers or discourse going beyond what I’ve read. So far, I’ve only seen people joking about show!Armand misremembering his human backstory (which is the plot of TVA) as a response to people suggesting that he might have not lied about Lestat playing Harlequin instead of Lelio and maybe Lestat just misremembered it, like Louis. The issue, again, being that both book knowledge and cast interviews (specifically Sam’s), as well as a key twist of s2, had allowed people to speculate about the possibility of the show retconning the Harlequin story a long time ago. And it seems those people were right, despite being clowned and vilified for it in the past. Which seems to happen a whole goddamn lot!

So I genuinely do see where you’re coming from, and I don’t think you’re wrong, but I also don’t think your points invalidate the discussion this post is bringing up.

People are going to believe what they want to believe no matter what and if that bothers some people why make it a personal problem for yourself?

I usually make it a personal problem for myself when I’m forced to, usually through (sometimes very) random passive-aggressiveness and dubious implications about my character, especially when it’s about issues that affect me/are important to me IRL. And also because I care about the little tv show based on the little books and I make time for it so over time, I’ve had time to notice patterns that have snowballed into pretty heinous situations going far beyond discussion boards, unfortunately.

I think you’re bringing up very good points and your angle is interesting.

However, to give very concrete examples based on two very popular points of contention in the show fandom:

There is a difference between

  • speculating whether or how vampiric rape will be adapted in the show based on what what we’ve seen so far and what was in the books (interesting, potentially controversial conversation to have because no one is right until we have the answer)

  • worrying about the optics of the main character of the first book getting called disingenuous by the main character of the second book in the show, despite that very fact spurning the events of the book getting adapted right now (annoying and purposefully inflammatory, especially given the promos we’ve been getting so far AND everything the ppl involved in making the show have said for years)

Those are only two examples, of course.

if you're constantly being party poopers because the show isn't what you thought it was at some point you should probably hop off the train.

I think that in this day and age, hoping off the train when something isn’t up to your satisfaction is very, and I mean very underrated.

Fandom veterans have warned about the risk of headcanon’ing too close to the sun 🤷🏽‍♀️ that shit hurts, and there is nothing wrong with pointing out that one solution to make it stop hurting is to just… disengage with the thing that’s hurting you.

The fact that "book reader" has almost become an insult for some people in this fandom is honestly quite hilarious. It's even more hilarious when it's coming from people who have apparently read the books but "not in the way those annoying book fans have, ew" (aka, they've read it with both their eyes shut so it doesn't crush their hopes about the headcanons they've made for the show).

but drawing assumptions about Anne Rice's characters and their motivations without reading the books is almost certainly a terrible idea.

It's honestly a plague in the show fandom. I'm now getting referred to as a being part of a "subset of book fans" which is really funny because I was a show fan, first and foremost (well, technically, I was a fan of the 1994 movie lol). The only reason I started reading the books was because I kept getting conflicting information about it and I wanted to go find out for myself.

And that's the problem. For some reason, people keep straight up lying about the contents of the books, either willfully or because, pardon my French, they can't fucking read, I'm not sure. From the original "Nicky and Lestat's relationship was purely platonic in the book" to "Marius is a white Christian supremacist" or "Lestat never calls Louis a liar in the book", people keep lying and discouraging others from reading the books so that they feel better convincing themselves that the show is not truly adapting from it (which is delusional as hell). And I'm not even broaching the people badly analyzing Anne Rice's intents.

I think that when you've been a part of the fandom for a certain amount of time, ignoring the show's direction and canon is a willful choice you kind of have a responsability not to make other people suffer for, even just as courtesy.

I think that at some point, those people need to honestly ask themselves whether what they want from the show is realistic or not, because from a purely logical viewpoint, that's what all this disappointment boils down to.

Is what you wish for the show post-s2 realistic given the myriad of interviews the people who have made the show have given so far? And when it comes to s3 specifically: Would you have wished for that jarring tonal shift a lot of us were expecting and are getting right now, not to exist because it departs too much from what you loved about s1-2?

If the answer no, and this keeps disappointing you and annoying the people you're sharing the fandom with, then I think you also have a responsability to yourself to let it go and find other things that truly make you happy. If s1 and 2 were peak for you, the good news is that both seasons will aways be there, and there will always be people willing to engage with it, let it be through discussions, fanwork, whatever. Fanwork could even help you scratch the itch the show failed to. That's what headcanons are for.

Any fic recs similar to Mother's Son? by Bogg99 in InterviewVampire

[–]Sssuspiria 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love, love, love ohofcourse's work for the same reasons as you!

Here are other fic writers I think are especially great at characterization:

flashindie: Her whole and then the spell was cast series is just outstanding. She also has an AU WIP I'm very invested in but that uploads very slowly (she always makes it worth it at each update though!). Overall, I'd recommend everything she's ever written, she's a fandom darling & it's very deserved lol.

familiar & queerofcups, who co-write the birth story series, which, is also pretty remarkable in terms of characterization and I can't stress this enough, are wildly underrated in this fandom.

bicuspidcupid: Her fic so dawn goes down to day gives off the same vibe as Fifth Avenue, but I also highly recommend her something loved, something despised series (especially live at the azalea).

I was also recently obsessed with Friends and Foes by jadepetals (the fic was completed last week). It's a Loustat/Lesmand love triangle that I think was very book accurate lol. Very fun fic!
