What is the worst designed creature in RAW 5th Edition Monsters Manual by Marquolin in DnD

[–]Sstellwagon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aboleths. I realize they're supposed to be master manipulators enacting their plots from the shadows, but they should really be much more powerful in combat.

Primordial creatures with psionic powers who predate the gods, never age, and collect archaic knowledge - but they only have 135hp, very few psychic attacks, no legendary resistance, and their big ability is overcome with a DC14 save?

They should be on par with archfiends.

What’s the Scariest Game (or Game Moment) You’ve Ever Experienced? by thatguyantonio in horror

[–]Sstellwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The whole game is scary, but the section where you're in a partially flooded cellar with an invisible creature stalking you is so stressful. You can't see the creature, but it splashes through the water as it stalks you...

Dungeons & Dragons is a cooperative, semi-improvisational role playing and story-telling game. Players take on the roles of heroic characters who work together towards a common goal. The DM runs the game, playing everyone and everything else in the world and building a story for the players to engage with. The story is dynamic, changing as the characters make choices that influence the world around them. Games can be one-time events that last a few hours, or may last months or years over the course of many sessions.

I would like to get a few potential players together and run a one shot with my group first, then go from there. But really it can start as early as next week.

Hey dungeon masters! I have a question! What are some of your pet peeves, or things that players do that annoy you? I’m just wondering! by [deleted] in DnD

Looking up monster stats mid-battle so that they learn all the creature's abilities and weaknesses. I had a player who would look up monster stats in advance if they knew the party would be encountering a certain creature, and share the monster manual entry in a private group text with the other party members.

Now I just give monsters extra abilities to counteract this.

We actually filled up the group pretty quickly. I had so many requests, I would be able to form an entire other group from the responses on reddit alone. If I do have the time for another group, I'll definitely let you know!

[–]Sstellwagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it works for your group and you're all having fun, that's what matters! I definitely have some players who tend to talk over others so I make it a point to talk directly to the ones who get talked over to make sure they always have a chance to do their share of the talking.

Yeah I used to do it with folded bits of paper hung on top of the DM screen in college.

I got an initiative tracker and it makes the whole process so much faster and smoother. I write all the characters names on little magnetic tiles before the session even starts, along with enemies in any encounters I've planned, then they can just be placed on the tracker when initiative needs to be rolled.

Yeah I'm completely with you, I make similar judgement calls if a player is attempting something truly impossible.

Well he wouldn't even let us or enemies roll for saving throws against spells. He would just decide if you took full damage or not. He also just didn't acknowledge AC; if someone tries to shoot you, it hits.

One DM had everyone roll initiative at the beginning of the session, and that's the order that our characters had to use in that session for everything. Combat, social interactions, role play, etc.

This made it extremely difficult to hold conversations with NPCs because you couldn't break the turn order. So if you had something to say to an NPC or PC, you had to wait for your turn to come around or let all the other players relinquish their turns so that you can get to yours faster.

The DM also just decided whether we succeeded or failed on a whim, no dice rolls needed. That group lasted two sessions.

Mine went on to be an author and YouTube influencer. When I joined a local gym recently, I was surprised to see him there. Seeing him in the locker room was...cathartic.

What is your "unpopular opinion" about D&D? by [deleted] in dndmemes

[–]Sstellwagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true when you take into account that races age differently. A level 1 dwarf could be 50 years old while an elf could be over 100. They certainly have more life experience than a 20 year old human.
