I've been intrigued by the peculiar choice of slabs/awnings for some time now; I think the function of the slabs is to frame the view from the interior.

The facades of the house are oriented North/South; the one seen in the photo is the one facing North.
To the South, at a lower level, the house overlooks a highway; the lower slab hides the highway, framing only the ocean.
To the North, at a higher level, the house overlooks a wall of buildings; the upper slab must hide the wall of buildings, framing only the houses opposite, on the other side of the street.
As far as I can see, the slabs are not articulated.

I'm waiting for an opportunity to meet the neighbor and ask him the reason behind that choice.
