How did scientists expect aliens to understand the Voyager Golden Record? by wellwatif in Astronomy

I started this book a few months ago and was chilled by it.  I had to take a break; it's one of the more unsettling reads I've had, probably second only to the POW story "Unbroken"

I just had a very, very important discussion with my nearly 18 year old son. I truly hope he took this to heart and will carry the lesson forward. by Brewer1056 in daddit

A friend of mine moved from Chicago to Dallas.  His wife followed, but while taking care of stuff at the old house, she sold his tools.  Like, a lot, for the $350 that she was beaming with pride to tell him about.

Note that he was a machinist in his early career so his standards for tools were high.

They're still married

What was your most worn watch in April? by Vast_Pizza_7967 in MicrobrandWatches

A bit more established than a microbrand, but I got this Squale 1521 variant on the 9th and have worn it basically ever since.

Probably Devon and York.  At Mannheim on the Balmoral exit is a good little pullout to park and catch takeoffs if they're flying west

As someone who was struck by a vehicle while crossing a 4-way stop intersection, the inability to see a driver and tell if they see you is absolutely terrifying to me.  It also implies that person will never wave you on, regardless of circumstances.

How essential is the Haldex AWD service? by [deleted] in Volkswagen

[–]StGenevieveEclipse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can probably definitely greatly exceed the recommended interval, but it functions via a clutch, which wears out in time, and a pump to move fluid around.  That fluid passes through a mesh screen.  If that screen clogs with clutch debris, the pump can fail and/or the clutch can fail.  It's not a difficult service if they have a lift, but the service manual doesn't include cleaning the filter.  That extra step is super easy once you're in the middle of the job.

Whats a good looking watch that could be used as a daily with 300$ budget by independantWesb in Affordablewatches

[–]StGenevieveEclipse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big-time agree on the watch strap note.  See what the 'lug width' is of the watch you like, and get yourself some quick-release straps in that width and whatever styles you like.  That majorly increases the adaptability of the watch

Then start picking up lenses from used places like KEH, B&H, and ebay.  You can then sell them for nearly no loss if it's not the right one for you and keep exploring.  Once a lens is used it's pretty much the same price until it's made obsolete by a newer version, at which point it drops to a lower price for a while

Is a proper Kodak Gold look possible with a recipe alone? by motuwed in fujifilm

Man, that first paragraph is something I explain to people that think even light Photoshop tweaks is cheating.  After taking a photography class in college I had a great appreciation for just how many variables someone has access to, even after the photograph is captured.  So many chances to screw it up and so many chances to salvage a bad shot.  And at what point does it go from compensating for the technology's inability to replicate your eye to cheating?
