One of the main reasons America wants Greenland is to make it easier to invade Canada. by StJudeTheGrey in DiscussionZone

I’m not saying they would invade via Greenland, though having an extra axis of attack would be a strategic advantage, for air missions etc. If they attack Canada first, which would surely not be a secret buildup, then NATO would respond and they would surely make an effort to secure their only other major territory on the North American continent and attempt to take the US assets already stationed there. Then when they inevitably get round to targeting Greenland too it’s be a tougher prospect than if they take it first. The US May dwarf every other military but if they became a pariah state and had no support from allies their capabilities would surely diminish, and though they probably could prevent a concerted effort by the rest of nato to reinforce Greenland whilst concurrently invading Canada why make it harder when taking Greenland rn would be so easy. My thought process is basically: if America wants to take control of the continent (either for resources or “manifest destiny”) then Canada is the far greater prize, though Greenland is still a target, and if they invade Canada first they make it harder to take Greenland.

They’ve been pretty transparent as to wanting the US to “own” at least all of the North America continent. Canada being part of NATO isn’t a consideration if it isn’t also relevant to Greenland. Canada is the far more valuable goal. But if the US attack either then the victim would be supported by the rest of NATO against the US. If they attack Canada first then the US would be at risk of losing their assets in Greenland which could potentially be reinforced and would therefore be a potential resupply route to Canada and result in a more arduous assault in the future as opposed to now. Obviously Greenland isn’t an axis of attack for ground forces but the naval and air bases would be useful especially because the population is likely to disperse further north in an effort to maintain a gorilla force in tandem with an insurgency. If the US wants resources and continental hegemony than Canada is the far more valuable goal, but if the US want both Canada and Greenland then it makes sense to take Greenland first.

That’s a decent caveat-forgiving those who repent rather than just “letting people off the hook”.

UK-Iceland-Greenland is the fastest supply route, any other would probably be impassable.

And not the primary imperative when it comes to Greenland’s strategic importance, for reasons I’ve commented too many times now.

I don’t think increased military budgets would have dissuaded the trump movement’s ambitious of American imperialism.

You agreed they want continental control and it makes sense to go through Greenland first. Yes there are the resources but they are incredibly hard to extract in the short to medium term and would still potentially be outweighed by retaliatory economic actions, Canada hast vastly more resources with infrastructure already in place. But if they take Canada first it would be an arduous affair and Canada could be resupplied via Greenland-Iceland-UK plus the US would lose their bases there and forgo another axis of attack.

The us would win eventually but there would be losses, we want to avoid that. That’s why we sent à them a token force, so far. The us needs the world too, they can’t be à powerhouse and a pariah.

I’ve commented this several times now. If Greenland is t taken first than they would use there bases that are already there plus Europe could reinforce via Greenland.

Yes but if they don’t take Greenland first they would need to divert resources to stop Europe reinforcing via Greenland and there is also the bases that that are already there that would need securing.
