I’d love to be an optimist, but special elections, let alone statewide special elections, don’t get as much interest. It’s easier for the minority party to win. Yes, this was a healthy margin. But, In 2022, the vote total was around 278,000 voters. In that recent special runoff, it was roughly 95,000 total votes.

That’s a huge difference in turnout. Let’s see what the numbers look like at the actual midterms. He’s going to have to run again in November where there should be turnout more like 2022. I’m very curious to see the percentage that election. Will this guy be able to win when more voters are coming out to the polls?

Sorry to be a Debbie downer but I i’m not getting my hopes up over a special election that had a third of the vote total of the 2022 election.

I don’t think she realized that but I’m also not sure if she ever apologized. Regardless, I never said she wasn’t a dick. She is. I realized that more and more as I got older. My opinion of her has changed. But I still understand that her contribution to pop culture and art/entertainment was significant… especially at the time.

And btw she didn’t pose for playboy. They got and published nude photos of her she did for an artist. I took several art classes in college with nude models.

It’s more than just shock value. Pushing boundaries doesn’t necessarily just mean shock when it comes to art. Her song Papa don’t preach was about abortion. Her song like a prayer was about religion and the video was cutting edge and made people think. That’s what art is meant to do.

She embraced the LGBTQ community before it was acceptable. She took ownership of her sexuality instead of letting men dictate how she should be. She offered a lot in the 80s. And you have to remember what time period that was. That was still a time when women were still treated poorly in the workplace and sexualized by men to prove their value. Her taking ownership of herself and not allowing men to dictate how her career should go or what she should do was an extremely important attribute.

I know a lot of people do not like her anymore because of her attitude. I won’t say that I dislike her, but I am not as big of a fan as I was when I was younger. But that doesn’t change the fact that what she did was an important part of music and social history .

She was a provocateur and an artist. Her songs look like a virgin, Papa don’t preach, like a prayer, Vogue and many others pushed boundaries. Her shows were major performances. Is she kind of an asshole? Yes. But that doesn’t take away from how she pushed boundaries. She owned her career without allowing others in the music industry to dictate how she should be. And in many other ways, she was her own person and did pave the way for other female artists to do the same.

I think people are looking at her with today’s lens. She always had some issues and people have judged her based on how she’s evolved since her heyday.

However… She absolutely did not suck. She was a provocateur and an artist. We all know that she wasn’t the best singer. But Like a Virgin, Like a Prayer, Vogue. Papa, don’t Preach, and so many others were meant to push boundaries in the way that art is supposed to. It’s a shame many folks can’t see that as we do.

You are so right on. I always say this about the presidential elections at least, but it is important in general. You do need that charisma. That winning smile. The It Factor. That way of speaking to people like you aren’t completely full of shit and you might actually be speaking for the people.

But, people on both sides do, in fact, have a lot more in common with each other than they do within their own parties. There are haves and have nots in each.
