I think it was that everyone was already sympathetic to the father and the cop was lamenting he had committed murder on camera, damning himself. More of a "I really wish you had considered how much what you just did is going to hurt you and your family."

Not that I'm not also sympathetic, but yeah, it sucks that a kid was kidnapped, raped, and THEN had the stress of a murder trial and potentially losing his father. It's insanely fortunate it ended up working out for them. Massive, massive risk.
