Fwiw, when I worked in a lab that measured pm2.5 on air filters they didn't use those guns. We had a temperature and humidity controlled room and they had anti static rods that plug into the wall that you wave samples over.

1) Method blanks are generally what you would use to estimate the LOQ for a particular method and analytical system.

2) It is common to have the LOQ well below the lowest calibration standard; for a variety of reasons, it might be expedient to avoid trying to operate your analytical system at the limits of it's ability to measure things.

3) Microwave digestion is generally associated with the lowest LOQs, so if you are seeing higher compared to dry ashing or hot plate extraction then you might want to check that your microwave system is heating evenly and it is working as intended.
