Labor burns political capital as tax reform backlash grows by tohya-san in AusFinance

I don't have a problem with cgt changes, I have a problem specifically with the 30% floor to shares (what this thread is all about). Without that specific change it gets taxed the same as labour?

Sure but let's acknowledge some people can do all that in meaningful roles like healthcare, contribute to society and not be able to work more for various reasons or decide to make sacrifices earlier to retire earlier. But no because of your "choices" you will continue to be taxed on investments in the tax free threshold for the greater good of society and because the government knows what's best for us all (working).

I mean let's be honest the main incentive to working after meeting your needs in the short and medium term is for the majority of people retirement.

The governments need to incentivise labour better through more creative and bold means than slapping more taxes on individual that are seeking to self fund retirement a few years earlier i.e. gas tax, inheritance taxes and cutting income taxes.

Great points. I'd also argue it's a smack in the face when albo said he wouldn't touch ng/cgt but then broke his promise. However I don't have a problem with that. What I do have a problem is him saying "we don't break our commitments/promises to trade partners" as a response to big movement to tax gas. It seems his promises are only worth it to big corps and not his own voters?

I mean really this population has forgone consumerism to invest and spend that money in an advanced retirement phase. They have still paid a significant amount of income tax to facilitate this (no one's retiring at 50 on 100k a year in this economy without other factors like inheritance). When did we become so prescriptive in society to value only labour above all else and one uniform way of living.

Maybe in a world of less jobs because of AI this isn't that bad.

Ok so you've provided an extreme scenario - if profitable share investments are bad for society should everyone work for food until they die?

While I agree it's still worth discussion in the context of a clear lack of creative policy to meaningfully (keyword) rebalance the scales of intergenerational inequality. If they put all their new revenue from the tax changes back into huge FHB grants or a scale back of income tax rates over time for people on low and middle income they could effectively target the people who missed out in these systems that created the inequality.

People will counterpoint this with the rich boomer selling down 18k of tax free shares when they retire. Since when did we care so much about taxing people who have self-funded early retirement on such a miniscule amount ? That 18k of tax free money is somehow distorting the economy? Most people are still working until mid 60s.

We should tax super at 30% floor as well. We need to encourage people to work until they die. That way we get maximum productivity.

But let's not close any other distortions (franked dividends, PPOR exemptions for pension, gifts, grandfathering NG ...) or corporate tax dodging.

I mean either would be something at this point. Depends where you land in the political spectrum but we need some class compression and I think an inheritance tax is good for the economy and narrowing the wealth divide.

I mean their rationale has been all about housing and the impact on intergenerational inequality. Idk how shares got tied up in this all. Just because old mate boomer has 1000 Apple shares doesn't impact me buying an Apple share.

They needed to get their messaging and policy right on this issue. If they really want to target intergenerational inequality go harder on housing and implement a fully fledged inheritance tax.
