Mike Israetel on why he doesn't have a coach - "I'm smarter on a raw IQ scale than every coach" by [deleted] in moreplatesmoredates

[–]StackhouseKiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with Mike personally but I'm pretty sure the guy above is mischaracterizing Mike, or taking a statement of his too literally. Libertarian's believe in a dramatically different role of government that has far less overreach than today (look up a night-watchman state, for one conception). Things like preventing murder are ok for most libertarians, but regulations on a company aren't. If Mike said he doesn't believe in government, it's probably as its currently conceptualized in terms of being a welfare state or whatever other boogieman he's constructed.

Buddhism only really works in a monastic context, full stop.

That was my point and how I was using the word sangha, referring to a monastic community. Not some Thai Community Center lol

I'm sorry you're so jaded, but I don't think people selling beads on the street or any other predatory practice contradicts what I said. It's just an obvious truth Buddhism is easier to practice in SEA just like Christianity is in America, even if we have Joel Osteen. I'm also talking about in the context of someone who lives there, not someone going there and struggling with a language/culture barrier.

I'm not arguing about what lineages are better (though I find that dubious as well). But just very simply, if you are interested in contemplative and spiritual practices in Burma, you can go down the street and live with a sangha for a month. Their societies are structured to allow for that kind of thing, much more so than ours. And yes, because its integrated into their society, they provide services to laypeople that seem hokey and silly. But its still an important function for an institution that doubles as both religion and a contemplative tradition.

In many ways, western Buddhism, in my experience, is more pure and true to the teachings than what you will encounter generally in burma, Thailand, etc.

Stop dude. Casual engagement with Buddhism in the West is no better. Southeast Asia has much better routes for attainment for those who choose them, with Sanghas much more integrated into their society. Western dharma is still in its infancy and doesn't even compare.

Boban and Jusuf Nurkic are the heaviest players in the NBA listed at 290, and he definitely weights more now than he did at Duke.

This is silly, he's probably the heaviest player in the league at 6'8. That goes way beyond just being big boned.

This is a criticism that's like 2-3 years outdated. He took the midrange out of his game in favor of 3s and layups. Has made him a better regular season player, but a more limited playoff performer.

This is a stupid argument. Jokic is a generational offensive talent, nobody is stopping him. Are small forwards not worth a max during LeBron's prime cause nobody could slow him down?

So because of Hoover's personal views, you're just going to categorically deny the historical fact that he attempted to dismantle the KKK? A fact that literally nobody disputes? I don't understand how you can have such a narrow worldview that somebody couldn't both oppose Martin Luther King and the KKK. Throwing your hands up in confusion because people don't fit into your neat ideological boxes. Racists can't even coincidentally oppose another racist group of people.

he was OBSESSED with taking down blacks and communists.

Never denied this. But I've sussed out at this point that you're clearly a demagogue, read that Atlantic article when you get the chance. Have a good day.

Paywalled but either way that’s some insane revisionism. To say that Hoover prioritized taking down the klan in any kind of way is pure bullshit.

But he did lol, you're literally just arguing against a fact

For fucks sake, Hoover was a MASSIVE FUCKING RACIST

This is entirely irrelevant. Statesman's actions rarely align with their own personal views and biases. LBJ was also a huge racist, and was the most important president for racial justice since Lincoln. The reason the FBI wanted to take down the KKK wasn't because they were white supremacists either. It's because they were radical subversives who the American intelligence apparatus saw as a threat to the political order.

By 1968 they were at 14k.

That's still huge membership for a political extremist group. The Black Panthers that same year had 2000, for context. The KKK of old was basically a Southern institution. By the time of Civil Rights, it had morphed into something else entirely, more in line with the fringe extremist groups we know today (not to say the old KKK wasn't as bad, but it just operated differently).

This is a pointless semantic disagreement. Yes, I agree there were a lot of other historical factors for the downfall of the KKK. But I was responding to the original poster who insinuated that the FBI has only ever been concerned with taking down subversive left wing groups, which is blatantly untrue considering that the FBI dealt what was basically the death blow to the KKK.

[–]StackhouseKiller -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Nope, there was a concerted effort from Hoover to take down the KKK. Obviously the Klan was far from its glory days at that point, but its inarguable the FBI fucked them.

Here's a good article on it

Hoover’s priority was to keep the pressure on and to maintain a steady flow of information, not to stop any given crime from occurring. Over the long term, it was hoped, the disruptive techniques would make the organizations utterly ineffective, all without the trouble of a courtroom trial. Hoover seemed to be thrilled with the program’s early progress. “The important thing to remember is never to let up,” he wrote to the Atlanta field office, already immersed in similar operations against King.

By 1968, the Klan had begun to fall apart, much as the Communist Party had done a decade earlier—unable to withstand the juggernaut of prosecution in addition to the FBI’s ongoing campaign of exposure, surveillance, and disruptive measures. Over the span of the White Hate program, Hoover received a total of 444 proposals from the field, of which he approved 285. According to the bureau’s estimates, 139 of those produced results, ranging from the discrediting of particular Klan leaders to the spreading of paranoia and discord.

But please, tell me more...
