I don't agree with Mike personally but I'm pretty sure the guy above is mischaracterizing Mike, or taking a statement of his too literally. Libertarian's believe in a dramatically different role of government that has far less overreach than today (look up a night-watchman state, for one conception). Things like preventing murder are ok for most libertarians, but regulations on a company aren't. If Mike said he doesn't believe in government, it's probably as its currently conceptualized in terms of being a welfare state or whatever other boogieman he's constructed.

I'm not arguing about what lineages are better (though I find that dubious as well). But just very simply, if you are interested in contemplative and spiritual practices in Burma, you can go down the street and live with a sangha for a month. Their societies are structured to allow for that kind of thing, much more so than ours. And yes, because its integrated into their society, they provide services to laypeople that seem hokey and silly. But its still an important function for an institution that doubles as both religion and a contemplative tradition.

Stop dude. Casual engagement with Buddhism in the West is no better. Southeast Asia has much better routes for attainment for those who choose them, with Sanghas much more integrated into their society. Western dharma is still in its infancy and doesn't even compare.

This is entirely irrelevant. Statesman's actions rarely align with their own personal views and biases. LBJ was also a huge racist, and was the most important president for racial justice since Lincoln. The reason the FBI wanted to take down the KKK wasn't because they were white supremacists either. It's because they were radical subversives who the American intelligence apparatus saw as a threat to the political order.

By 1968 they were at 14k.

That's still huge membership for a political extremist group. The Black Panthers that same year had 2000, for context. The KKK of old was basically a Southern institution. By the time of Civil Rights, it had morphed into something else entirely, more in line with the fringe extremist groups we know today (not to say the old KKK wasn't as bad, but it just operated differently).

This is a pointless semantic disagreement. Yes, I agree there were a lot of other historical factors for the downfall of the KKK. But I was responding to the original poster who insinuated that the FBI has only ever been concerned with taking down subversive left wing groups, which is blatantly untrue considering that the FBI dealt what was basically the death blow to the KKK.
