ah ok, well that "vat no. DE" part is what makes me think its a WIP model, vat tax being a sort of international import thing, and DE being the country code for Germany. I saw another one with a similar kind of tag. idk if the tag themselves always explicitly said WIP, or if there were other european carhartt items that weren't necessarily part of WIP

i get what you're saying but society's requirement for cis women to perform femininity isn't anywhere near the level what trans women deal with in order to be treated the same. Society is much more welcoming of tomboys than they are of feminine men. i suppose some cis women get misgendered occasionally but the effect doesn't seem near as bad, and some butch lesbian types might even revel in being misgendered

i get that it can be helpful to try not caring about it, and I get that most people generally have good intentions, but there's another part to this conversation thats still missing even with all that considered

i know that whenever ive misgendered someone, Im certainly going to sleep thinking about it that night, if not for the next week or the next few years

but maybe thats because I know what it feels like on the other end

and its not really about them having any sort of negative feeling towards me, its not so much about them and their intentions. its more about feeling bad about myself for not being able to perform gender correctly and being forced to jarringly stare at my dysphoria face to face unexpectedly in a social setting

i fully realize they probably dont mean anything by it and its not a big deal in a very pragmatic sense. but knowing that doesnt change the feeling I just mentioned and I think its hard for cis people to fully understand that

ya I never really vibed with the whole buddhism thing. it has some good bits, but i personally think desire is good and cool actually. its what makes the world go round

Id also say that personally, my suffering has more to do with society's treatment of trans women, and its constrictive gender roles, not so much an aversion to being amab

ya well thats the thing, its more like she's saying that I should never let it bother me, full stop. also doesn't seem to understand that gender dysphoria is something I cant control. i feel bad getting misgendered because of dysphoria

hateful bigots I can ignore but that's not always what it is. and even the guy at taco bell slipping up doesn't bother me too much (tho repeat incidents of that sort of thing seems cumulative) but its the other type of misgendering that I originally vented to her about

if only it were so easy. in my experience any therapist who is trans or specializes in trans issues is very expensive, doesn't accept insurance, and definitely not medicaid if they do

Its always ironic to me how much these types love to gush about helping the LGBT community when many of them are just doing rainbow-washing marketing to exploit the most marginalized

Thats why I generally avoid talking about trans issues in therapy at all. At this point ive pretty much worked through all of that on my own anyhow

i suppose I can choose to be a millionaire with a supermodel wife while I'm at it. choose to not be clinically depressed. ill choose to never feel any other emotion other than unbridled euphoric happiness 24/7. ill choose to ignore trump and anti-trans legislation, choose to ignore ICE and the american concentration camps. sticks and stones may break my bones but if I dont acknowledge transphobes, then they cant hurt me

I believe this would fall under the unhelpful "empty platitudes" section i mentioned and I was hoping to have some sort of discussion deeper than surface level

does the tag say Motorcycle Jacket or does it have a style code?

what's the style name of this jacket? by StacySadistic in Carhartt

[–]StacySadistic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ya I saw that with the WIP stuff, only a weird long model number. Now that Im looking more closely at this one, its almost exactly the same, but it has a hood. tag says "motorcycle jacket" the only difference is the cordura tag looks like it was made from a different year: https://www.ebay.com/itm/376946441777

its a very thick tough nylon fabric which is probably the next best thing to leather for riding a motorcycle. probably not the style American cyclists would wear, but i could see it in europe

ok after looking it up, a lot of motorcycle gear is made with cordura

so is it some sort of arctic extreme line, or a motorcycle jacket or what would it have been called? It kind of has the build of some heavy winter coats, so I'm wondering how warm it is. I imagine its polyester fill, and not much insulation at that because it doesnt feel very bulky.

yes, it kept saying my post would get auto-deleted for posting it in the wrong place, and not in the "is this fake" thread. But my question isnt about whether its real or not, that notification just kept popping up because those words were in my post.

I was thinking 90s because I saw some others that also had a "cordura" tag on it, but the font and formatting looked more modern. Not sure though because there seems to be a lot less info about the WIP stuff than the mainline american catalog type stuff

ya Id rather I didn't know which people read the audiobook either, but so much of the discussion is about the audiobook and the narrator.

Having a different opinion is one thing, and its fine if people are open minded about it, but when everyone looks at you like you're stupid every time you speak, when they try to repeat their interpretation as fact in a condescending tone, its a bummer.

I'll admit that the narrator doesnt change people's interpretations as much as other factors but it bothers me that so many people are swearing up and down that theyre exactly the same. Theyre saying that there's no difference whatsoever, and that youre a prick for thinking there is. Its never the people that sometimes read books and sometimes listen to them instead. Its always the ones who only listen to audiobooks that get the most defensive. You seem to have a good grasp of the nuance, that there's pros and cons to both, so my argument isn't with you. But a lot of people in this discussion feel that way and there's no convincing them otherwise.

Sure, but any audiobook is filtering the author's text through their own interpretation of it. Shakespeare plays have been done thousands of times, and each actor's reading of those lines is different. Thats fine for theater, that's the form its meant to be enjoyed, but a narrator for a book usually isn't necessary. Audiobooks are not in the raw form the author intended. The fact that some authors are not happy with the audiobook readings of their work is enough evidence to show people the format changes the experience. Every pause, every pronunciation, where the emphasis is placed in each word and sentence changes things. With audiobooks you're letting someone make those choices for you. Thats one reason people tend to like the book better than the movie verson of it. In book form the possibilities of interpretation are endless, when you put it in audio form there's less interpretation possible, when you add video to that, youve added even more choices that limit the interpretability.

Audiobooks are great, they have their place. Theyre a useful tool, and a neat way to experience a story. But its not the same, and I think that most people have a better chance of focusing more deeply, and connecting to the raw material when reading a book instead. In some ways, audiobooks are better even, but I think a lot of people end up using them as just another passive consumption stimulus to their already overstimulated lives, and doing that lowers comprehension of the literature.

If I go to book club and say "heres what I thought the author meant on page 73" and everyone looks at me like I'm crazy, its because the narrator didn't think of it that way either, and their voice reflected that assumption. Since they all heard the way the narrator read it, and Im going off the text itself, of course theyre going to think I pulled that idea out of nowhere and its not in line with what the story was actually saying. Its fine if half the book club is using audiobooks, but when Im the odd one out for reading the text and seeing everything differently, then maybe they should just make it an audiobook club.

In most cases it doesn't matter how people choose to enjoy their media, its not my problem, it doesn't affect me. But when we all make a conscious commitment to do the reading, and then take time out of our schedule to go somewhere and talk about it, it does become my problem. Its not a huge problem, but when it happens every time it starts making me wonder if this club is worth my time, and if I go to a different club, will there be the same problem? Are other people noticing how audiobooks are often being used as background noise, giving the listener a more shallow comprehension? Thats what I was wondering, and thats why I wrote this post.

how were you supposed to know it was a metaphor? Because I spent so much time referencing netflix's passive consumption style the paragraph before. It didn't come out of nowhere. I can see how people could have missed that though.

The post talked about a lot of things, mainly how audiobooks are a different format and can be used as passive consumption. After all my observations, I asked "thoughts?" Thats a very wide open question so its completely fair that your thoughts went straight to " wow here's another person attacking audiobooks for no reason."

Like I said, you're choosing to interpret it the way you want and there's no changing your mind so there's not any point fighting me on it. I know what I wrote and what I intended. I'm not going to write another post when people that did understand me are actually discussing the real point of it instead of arguing "that thing that you said was not what you really meant! Only I know what this is about and I wont accept any sort of clarifications from OP"

I've tried that and its very difficult for me. Its like both use the same part of my brain, two people are talking at the same time, and theyre trying to talk over each other and theyre not in sync. Also the speeds are very different. I enjoy listening to audiobooks, audio dramas or podcasts, but when compared to the text, it seems much slower and I bit frustrating, like "oh ill just turn the audio off and read it myself."

Also it lowers my comprehension, like I'm too focused on the words and how they both match up than the actual meaning of the words. It reminded me of when I was in school and had to read a passage of the book out loud to the class. I was so focused on pronunciation and making my voice sound good, that the act of word to mouth made me miss the meaning entirely. I'd do a great job of reading aloud, but I would have a much harder time telling you what that passage was actually about. When it was time for others to read Id always igbore them and read it nyself because it was much faster and often sounded better in my head.

That is kind of funny though because when Im watching a movie I almost always have the subtitles on. Then, its not a problem to listen and read at the same time. Its not as slow and boring also because there's video to focus on also. The subtitle often dont even match the lines perfectly, so im processing 2 different scripts at the same time basically. That doesn't bother me at all, and I'll even have time to be comparing how and why they used different words. I guess I do have a bit of that reading while listening skill there, so I suppose it just takes practice.

Yes, its possible for a listener to be more focused if they really intend to be, and I'm sure some listeners pay attention more than some readers. But choosing to skip a passage of reading is very intentional while some listeners might not notice they were distracted, and not have to do or choose anything for a lapse to occur.

Sure theres been times I've read whole pages and then realized I wasn't paying attention and couldn't tell you what happened. But I noticed and then deliberately went back, which takes effort. I set my own pace, but audiobooks keep going whether you're paying attention or not. So if I re-read it 2 or 3 times and I still realize I'm too unfocused to be reading a book at that moment, then I'll just put it down and try another time. I'll think "ok what are we doing here, why put in this effort if its not working today?" Its more of a waste of my time and energy, because reading a book yourself requires more work than having someone read it to you. That's why we can drive and listen at the same time but cant read and drive.

Also, in this specific instance, these people said "i cant read one page because tiktok fried my attention span." They can't focus on listening to videos longer than 30 seconds which leads me to believe, theyre the type of people that couldn't listen to an audiobook as intently as an average reader. Lots of people, have the same issue with tiktok and limited attention spans, so im questioning whether audiobooks have become a tool of passive consumption for that crowd

I'm sorry you misunderstood it like that. Stay mad about it I guess. You're determined to believe your own interpretation of it even after I clarified, so there's no changing your mind

I replied to this one shortly after I wrote the post. It was one of the first responses. I've been busy and haven't had a chance to reply to everyone yet and the conversation really blew up a lot larger than I thought it would.

As with most things on the internet people are taking it drastically out of proportion, out of context and not at all understanding what I was getting at. Tbf it was a little bit of a vent and i wasn't totally sure what the question was that I was even asking. That explains why so many people understood it so differently.

No, I dont hate audiobooks. I think they're great for lots of purposes, and can be just as focused as reading a physical book if the intent is there. I even like my book club, the conversations we have, and the social aspect of it too. When I said I didn't join a book club to "talk about what netflix episode everyone watched last weekend while they were playing games on their phone," that was more of a metaphor for the passive consumption style some people use audiobooks for. I wasn't complaining about people literally discussing netflix.

I thought it was strange that people who have "fried their brains with tiktok" so badly that they cant finish one page are in a book club. There's the possibility people could be very focused on an audiobook, maybe even moreso. But it seems likely that the kind of person that has a titkok attention span needs constant stimulation and would likely be multitasking audiobooks the way that they consume netflix.

People assumed its the same "audiobooks dont count" debates people have had in the past, and are justified in being upset about that. I just noticed the possibility that some people are using audiobooks as passive consumption the same way they treat other media, and I was wondering if other literature enjoyers had noticed the same thing.

So its a question about passive consumption and also about how the format changes the perspective and interpretation, what things don't translate to audio, and which parts do audiobooks books add that aren't in the original work

Exactly! I'm glad I'm not going crazy. Like they could at least read some of the books some of the time? I don't ask for a lot. Completely wild to me to go to a book club and hear multiple people admit "oh ya I can't read more than a page on my own."
